Bonjour et Salut, all sinful beings in the depths of Hell, especially all the imps and hellhounds! The official French dub of “Murder Family”, the first episode of the first season of Helluva Boss was teased before hazbeans fell in love with a new wave of Valentine’s Day-themed Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss merchandise back in February [19] [20] [23] [45] [46]. It was then released after the release and outstanding reception of “Exes and Oohs”, the third episode of the second season earlier this month [4] [21] [22] [38] [73] [74]. And of course, I hold no bias against fanmade foreign dubs [29]. It has been almost three years since I reviewed the original English version of “Murder Family” [68] [69]. Does my overall opinion on the episode still stand? Alliteration aside, I shall cast one helluva spell from the grimoire and review the first post-pilot episode for the second time. After all, a re-review can make up for mistakes that were made in the previous review and provide a faintly updated view of an episode with a few opportunities that were missed [54] [77] [78]. After watching the fourth episode of TailsTube that featured Amy Rose [60], let us dive back down to the first depths of Hell a few days after the release of “Petite Meuture en Family” from the Hazbin Hotel Française team [23].
I think I had a vague flashback of my French lessons at high school [5]. Faintly similar to My Talking Tom being re-released on Apple Arcade last year and Sonic Colours Ultimate becoming available on Steam back in February [48] [59], a rereview of the first episode of Helluva Boss shall commence in association with the release of its French dub being titled “Petite Meuture en Family”, also known as “Little Family Murder” in English [23]. So, does the episode still hold up? [55]

This time, let us start with the portrayal of Mrs. Mayberry who is voiced by Mara Wilson [39]. She starts off as a cheerful elementary school teacher just after she begins to narrate, much to my surprise at the time considering how adult-oriented the pilot was [23] [24] [39] [40] [41]. All her joy and sweetness were then snatched away from her as she catches her husband Gerald having an affair on her computer and rushes home to kill him…and herself before becoming a demon in Imp City [23] [39]. Although I remember firmly suggesting to not make any of I.M.P.’s clients take their own lives as I take suicide very seriously in real life, I am relieved that Mayberry’s suicide was at least the key to a rather engaging plot and not some form of off-colour dark humour or referred to as “coward’s way out” and the gradual build-up of her catching Gerald cheating on her and the murder-suicide she commits was pretty good [70] [71]. Her motivation in Hell is quite like the crimson-fleshed demon who hired the three imps in the pilot [39] [40]. With a client of I.M.P. leading to a thrilling murder mission, the first season started off quite exceptionally back in Halloween 2020 [39].
Mrs. Mayberry’s fate went from the vibrance of an educational PC game to Catherine on steroids instantly [15] [68] [69]! I am still amazed at how Mara Wilson got to voice her in the original English version [27] [39]. What is going to happen to the poor children after the suicide of their teacher? [23]
Oh, wait…they just had to believe that Martha is a “hero”, even after they saw what happened on Mrs. Mayberry’s computer [39]?! What the heck, children?! Must be because of the media spreading the false narrative and Martha and her family playing along with it… [23]

Blitzo is once again an irresponsible and reckless son of a gun after a meeting with Mrs. Mayberry [23] [39]. He certainly continues to be disrespectful to Moxxie, not listening to his suggestion during the mission, accusing him of masturbating back at their targets’ residence and even threatening to…do something dirty with him and his wife, even after accepting his apology for something that will be explained later. He remains quite business minded throughout the episode, despite the lack of professionalism on a billboard he created in Imp City. Could the fact that his blood is as black as ink be partially inspired by certain censorship applied to the Japanese version of Shadow of the Tomb Raider [7]? There is a call-back to the call he had with a certain higher-up in Hell in the pilot [23] [39] [40] [41], which once again concerned some viewers to a degree due to how one-sided their relationship is regarding the use of the grimoire, but ultimately led to some potential in terms of character development before the first season progressed with new episodes [13] [51]. There is something about Blitzo’s antiheroism that is quite unmistakably charming, thus making him one hell of a boss. After all, he is voiced by Brandon Rogers, a comedian and actor [14] [26].
As first seen in the pilot [40] [41], the Blitzster is sappily fatherly to Loona, which can be irritating to her [39]. The moment he grosses her out by eating a dog biscuit like how a frog would eat a fly in “Murder Family” is a notable example of it [68] [69]. Some potential for his one-sided relationship with a certain owl to eventually blossom into a far healthier one was somewhat suspected at the time of the English version’s release [13] [51] [68] [69]. When do you think his therapist will make his debut in the series? [23]

On the other pages of the grimoire, Moxxie is still rather skeptical and confrontational about his employer’s actions [23] [39] [40] [41]. For the sake of his occupation, he holds quite a grudge against him as he gets all the blame after his surprise entrance makes him accidentally fire an arrow that smashes into a tank of electric eels [23] [39]. Aside from his grudge, he frets when he sees their targets having a seemingly wholesome dinner together, which disrupts the mission and kind of prevents predictability. As tasteless as it seems to portray a panic attack solely as a conflict device, it still led to a theory on why a particular aspect of the assignment caused Moxxie to have one and makes him a more relatable character to an extent [68] [69]. Moreover, it is consistent with how he was portrayed in the pilot as there was a moment of Millie trying to reassure him to prevent him from having a panic attack [40] [41]. What boosts his likeability in the episode even further is how he rescues his wife and boss to make up for his slip-up [23] [39]. Lastly, the way Moxxie tries to confront the evil family within his sense of morality shows how morally stable he is for a demon, which makes his personality stand out from the team [68] [69].
Moxxie’s character development is still my biggest highlight of the episode, yet he still had funny moments, such as the way he made a reference to The Godfather [27]. admire him for how he tried to deal with the family his own way, even though it, unfortunately, backfired when the police helicopter blew up their house [23] [39]. He is, without a doubt, one of my favourite characters. And what a convenient time to release the official French dub after “Exes and Oohs” provided a possible explanation for his panic attacks and hesitation towards murdering a family [38] [40] [41] [73] [74]. [23]

The female members of I.M.P. are precious to the dudes [23] [39] [40] [41]. Voiced by Vivian Nixon, which resulted in her sounding Southern, Millie is once again as competent as her husband and her boss when it comes to slaughtering fiends for clients [39]. Compared to Moxxie’s fretting near the team’s goal and disapproval of eradicating a family, she simply goes along with the assignment and claims that what matters most is who the client wants dead, making her his somewhat opposite, but a loving spouse [23] [39]. Looking back at “Murder Family” and now watching its official French dub, I kind of wish Millie was there to comfort Moxxie during his panic attack, which is what I would love to see in one of the upcoming episodes of the second season in a way that is more powerful than a brief example in the pilot [40] [41]. Still voiced by Erica Lindbeck, Loona is about as moody and apathetic as she is in the pilot, but a little more rational as she explains how a family that looks sweet and innocent in a photograph may not always be like that [23] [39]. Oh! And did I mention that Loona is voiced by a different voice actress in the French dub of “Murder Family” as some contrast to the English recasting for Millie [23] [39] [40] [41]?
Moxxie is the yee to Millie’s haw. Millie is the haw to Moxxie’s yee [16]. I adore how another reason why she is happily married to him is because of his big heart [39]. And at least Moxxie did not get rickrolled [33]. [23]

To this day, Loona’s point stills stands when it comes to people seeming so tender-hearted and charming at first…before one eventually discovers their true colours [39] [62]. [23]

Millie is not the only supporting character from the English version of the pilot to get a new voice [68] [69]. Part of me now believes that having Stolas call the Blitzster during his bath time is to sexualise him to a degree [39] [40]. Moreover, I would not be surprised if Daddy_HootHoot had a part-time modelling career before he and Stella had Octavia [61], even though his Sinsatgram account is not active anymore [73] [74]. And guess what? The official French dub marks the second time he got a new voice after the success of the pilot [18] [23] [39] [40] [41]. Before the series progressed, the relationship between Blitzo and Stolas seemed to be stuck as the R-rated gay version of SonAmy [57] [60]. However, many hazbeans, including yours truly began to wonder when will their relationship evolve beyond that stage. Even though the gag of the regal yet raunchy prince describing a sexual activity with censor bleeps is witty [23] [39] [40] [41], not every viewer will let it slide [64], especially after knowing that he was already married before the second season began [42] [43]. As long as a new voice ultimately suits a character’s appearance and traits, it is really not that much of a sin. Furthermore, both his current English voice by Bruce Pinkham and his new French voice by Laurent Blanpain are…enticing, especially for passionate fornication with an imp [23] [39].
Hopefully, the 36th spirit of the Ars Goetia will not take a bath during Sir Pentious and Cherri Bomb’s battles [37] [53] [79] [80]. Anyone for jelly sandwiches later [39]? [23]

Martha seemed so sweet and innocent to many people in the living world after she survived Mrs. Mayberry’s wrath [23] [39] [68] [69]. But once Moxxie panicked and disrupted Blitzo’s aim, her true colours shone alongside her husband’s right as she shot the wall of their log cabin, which makes her another one of those antagonists who seems harmless and innocent first, despite how he must have seduced Gerald into having sex with him. It could be applied to her relationship with Ralphie is open to gradually lure male victims to their demises. The children turning out to be just as evil as their parents during an interrupted dinner time kind of came out of nowhere, but their evilness still added to the moment of suspense during Moxxie’s awakening in captivity. I can tell that the family is a corrupted kind of religious one due to a brief moment of Martha attending a church and how she believes in Satan, mistaking the Blitzster for him. Martha and her family are basically the R-rated equivalents of the villainous family from Minions [46], which not only proves Loona’s point but is part of what makes the first episode a step up from the pilot by featuring some fairly interesting antagonists, despite how underdeveloped they were apart from Martha [23] [39].
Contradictory to what many people and the media they follow believed after her near-death experience, Martha is a terrible person and definitely not a hero [39]. Now that just reeks of satire! The same applies to her husband and two children. And we thought Eddie, the foul-mouthed child from the pilot was a piece of sh** [40] [41]! [23]
As for Mrs. Mayberry, I still wonder if she could appear in a new episode in a third season of Helluva Boss, as unlikely as that sounds due to the purpose of each episode consisting of some form of individuality [79] [80]. [23]

The animation in “Murder Family” is a slight upgrade from the animation in the pilot [23] [24] [39] [40] [41]. The characters’ movements are quite fluid and highly expressive. The backgrounds make the living world detailed and colourful with some nice shading and lightning effects, most notably Mrs. Mayberry’s brightly lit classroom and outside of the family’s log cabin [68] [69], looking striking in the build-up in the daytime and the chaos at night [23] [39]. The shading and lighting effects do not look intense as the effects in the Marvel’s Midnight Suns prequel shorts but they still make the scene where Moxxie wakes up in captivity intimidating [23] [34] [39]. Stolas’ hypnotic, constellation-infested bathtime is notably different compared to one of his old Voxtagram posts that was posted a few months before the English version of the episode was released [9] [10]. Lastly, there are some other nicely done effects, such as the aura around the portal to different realms and the lights on the police cars [23] [29]. Whether you are still active on DeviantArt in 2023 or not [58], you still cannot go wrong with the energetic animation and vibrant backgrounds in “Murder Family”, especially after the release of the official French dub almost three years later [23] [39], despite some animation errors that many hazbeans have spotted, including the inconsistency of Blitzo’s eyelids [27].
Aside from the various shades of red during Moxxie being held captive by two ironically sadistic children bringing out the suspense of revealing some disturbing results of flaying [39] [68] [69], the bleakness increases with the darkened yet vibrant palette of the forest where Blitzo takes cover from Martha, almost like trying to avoid Slenderman in Slender: The Eight Pages [52]. [23]
To be honest, it is a little disappointing to see that no font on any objects in the backgrounds, such as the banner at the end has been translated into French in the episode as it was done in the French dubs of the pilot and “That’s Entertainment” [37] [41], even though this may not be such a big deal to many French-speaking hazbeans who are more than happy to finally watch the French version of “Murder Family” [22] [23] [24] [55]. Was there a technical difficulty that prevented visual translations from being rendered? Nevertheless, maybe there can be some time taken to carefully translate English text into French text in the dubs of the other episodes of the first season [37] [41]. [23]

Aside from excellent animation, there also needs to be engaging aspects of an episode’s writing. As swift as the drastic shift from a cheery musical number to a dramatic reaction to an affair is, it still had some good build-up starting from the kid with a dunce cap mentioning Gerald’s birthday [23] [39] [68] [69]. The plot of “Murder Family” is a big step up from the pilot that had a simple plot that was a little too much like a Family Guy episode with a few cutaway scenes [40] [41] [66] [67], which affected its originality to a degree. With some satire regarding Martha’s portrayal, “Murder Family” has further elevated the notably unique premise for an animated series [23] [39]. I simply adore how Martha’s attempt to burn Blitzo and Moxxie logically backfires…without a pun intended…because they are demons from Hell [68] [69]. Another humourous example is when Moxxie attempts to call the police on the family before realising that he was holding a television remote instead of a phone [23] [39] [68] [69]. Even though the English version of “Murder Family” was released in late 2020, thank Satan there was not a single reference to the rules we followed to survive a global pandemic, which ought to apply to every single episode of Hazbin Hotel for the sake of our mental well-being [77] [78].
As much as I cannot go wrong with “Let It Go” from Frozen: The Musical [3] [12], I still personally consider “Teacher’s Song” to have a rather unrealistic perspective. Could Chaz from “Exes and Oohs” be just as charming in French, especially in a French version of his erotic musical number [38] [56]? [23]
The story of “Murder Family” is thankfully more original and intriguing than the plot of the pilot [22] [38] [39] [40]. It is about as zany as Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy from the Resident Evil franchise in Fortnite: Battle Royale [11]. I believe that the series’ focus can be set back on I.M.P. going on zany missions to assassinate terrible people on Earth but provide a way to prevent the formula from going a little stale and allow some episodes to further develop specific relationships in Hell [23] [39]. [23]

How about we go over the audio? There are quite a lot of bizarre and lifelike sound effects, including gunshots during Martha’s rampage and silly squeaks during the moments she has sexual intercourse [23] [39]. And of course, there are fitting sound effects for more laidback moments, such as the gentle splashing of the water and popping of the bubbles as the mesmerising “Stolas Speaks” plays during Stolas’ bath time [30]. Some surreal sound effects add to the emotions of the characters, such as the growl that is heard when Blitzo grabs and yells at Moxxie after some firefighters leave the building and a snake’s hiss during Mrs. Mayberry’s hair flickering like fire during her annoyance [23] [39]. And thank Satan there was not a use of a certain DAMN AIR HORN [77] [78]!!! I am quite intrigued by the theme tune that plays when I.M.P. is getting ready to strike as that would fit the feeling of paintballing [23] [39] [70] [71]. Lastly, the voice acting in both the English and French versions is outstandingly top-notch [23] [39]. Despite how an excessive use of sound effects can be quite grating [77] [78], the audio, especially the voice acting and dialogue is ultimately another part of what has made “Murder Family” want more episodes from our delightfully devilish hazbeans [39].
Kudos to both the English and the French audio departments [23] [39]! [23]

In conclusion, I am still thankful for the first episode being summoned after the hard times we had in 2020 and I still dearly praise it for being a big step up from the pilot after watching “Petite Meurtre en Famille” [8] [24]. I believe that a future episode ought to set the series’ focus back on Blitzo’s company to let what made the pilot a hit in the first place stand out again [23] [39]. On the other pages of the grimoire, there is still potential to finally solve a cliffhanger [44]. Our French-speaking hazbeans can look forward to the official French dub of the other episodes of the first season [19] [20] [21] [22] [23]. Hopefully, for the French dubs of “The Circus” and “Seeing Stars”, the contradictions of Stolas’ long-term memory and the power of the grimoire will be removed to slightly ensure the quality of the writing [42] [43], quite like how the mentioning of Adolf Hitler was removed for the German dub of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves [6]. Additionally, the French version of the reprise of Addict by Silva Hound mentions how Angel Dust wishes to be redeemed and enter Heaven, even though that difference could possibly be a translation mistake [17] [25] [31]. Stay sinful…et au revoir!
What could there be next in a third season of Helluva Boss? A ‘50s diner briefly inspired by Peggy Sues in the Gluttony ring [28] [35] [36]? In the meantime, we shall look forward to the official French dubs of “Loo Loo Land” and so on [70] [71]. I bet if Nanette from Angela Anaconda is all grown up, I bet she would try to enjoy the French dub of “Murder Family” [1]. A grand merci goes to the Hazbin Hotel Française team for another très bon French dub, including Lucy Studer, Cécilia “Calis” Goncalves and Matilde Sauvaitre [23]! [41]
Words could not describe how Twitter can be too toxic for me to handle [2] [32], but I am delighted to rereview “Murder Family” [23] [39] [68] [69], quite similar to how PARANOiD DJ produced a reworked version of “Use Me Up” and I am grateful for the funny moments on Twitter [50] [51] [72]. There may be no sign of a certain crazy canine continuing his legacy in a new webcomic series [68] [69] [75] [76], which is probably for the best [63], but we sinners can look forward to the rest of the second season of Helluva Boss [73] [74]. Until then, do not tell Angel Dust that Santa Claus is not real [65].
