The Happy Tree Friends Find Dumb Ways To Die In One Crazy Crossover

This is an analysis and a review of a crossover that contains strong moments of blood, gore and mutilation. Reader discretion is advised.

A collaboration between Mondo Media’s ironically gory franchise known as “Happy Tree Friends” and Metro’s musical public service announcement known as “Dumb Ways To Die” titled “Happy Train Friends” was released alongside the Bratz doll based on Regina George from Mean Girls and the official gameplay trailer for The Sims 4: Life & Death [2] [3] [14] [17] [83]. I am familiar with both groups of species that get killed in bizarre ways as a former friend of mine was a fan of Happy Tree Friends back when we were in high school and I fondly remember playing the first Dumb Ways To Die game on my iPod Touch between my first and second years of college [7] [49]. There are dumb ways to die in games like Leisure Suit Larry 6: Shape Up or Slip Out! and Grand Theft Auto V [22] [25] [35] [76], but can the ways to die in a new crossover be dumber or simply shocking? Shortly after witnessing the rise of Harley Gaga with my fiancé [32], creating my own Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss character known as “Lisa Cooper” in the console version of The Sims 4 and thinking of some animation admirers getting starstruck by the return of the cast of the Sing duology in a haunting new animated short on Netflix [21] [65] [91], I advise you to brace yourself for a short but shocking crossover between vulnerable Beans and tree friends [14] [17].

The colourful characters from the iconic music video that turned out to be a PSA are called “Beans” [15]. And yes, many of their names are cringey [13]. I suspected that the insanity of Happy Train Friends would begin with Nutty, the lime green, sugar-addicted squirrel taking a bite out of Putz, the Bean who is known for holding a red balloon, mistaking him for a jellybean [15] [16], but it turns out that it begins with Handy being decapitated by a spinning stop sign due to Lumpy playing a game on what appears to be a handheld device based on the Game & Watch series from Nintendo when he is supposed to be the train’s conductor [17] [63] [82] [89] [90]. I admire how Handy provides some passable representation of those who have lost a limb [58] [59], but I also suspected that he would pretty much be one of the pawns for reminding us of the dumbest ways to die Metro warned us right after an iconic musical number just before the release of Happy Train Friends [15] [63]. I guess I was right. A new incarnation of Zip from Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft is a brilliant comic relief with his wit and wisecracks [36], but that is not the case in the usual shock factor of the Happy Tree Friends series combined with dialogue limited to gibberish, gasps and screams and we shall expand on that as we go along [17].

I am pretty sure that Greg the Grim Reaper is bloody sick of the critters always dying by now [50] [55] [61] [62]. [17]

Correcting me on his unhealthy antics, Nutty does take a bite out of Putz [17], quite like how Mac from Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends biting into a gummy bear’s ear whilst going crazy due to a sugar rush in the episode “Partying is Such Sweet Soiree” [30] [64], but even more unsettling [17]. I feel bad for the blonde-hair Bean named “Stumble” who is known as listening to music from his MP3 player as he gets pushed into the faulty luggage storage by a retreating Putz and has his feet grated away on the railway tracks [13] [15] [17], which is what running on a treadmill without shoes on feels like. Seriously, Lumpy? You have not learned anything from your past deathly experiences by now [56] [60]? And why the fudge and caramel ice cream truck would you try to start your car on a railway track after your duties as a train conductor [17]?! I am proud of Lara Croft reuniting with Camilla Roth, an old sister figure of hers in the fourth episode of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft [12], along with her efforts to find Jonah to make amends with him in the fifth episode, but as for the cute critters we knew and felt so bad for since 1999 [26], it looks like there are doomed to stick to the Kenny McCormick status with not much character progression [17] [85]. 

Feel free to stick to Hello Kitty on her 50th anniversary [1] [5] [28] [29] [84], Miss Piggy’s flair in the tenth season of Disney Speedstorm [11], the third wave of Helluva Boss YouTooz figures [100], the new DLC for Minecraft based on the classic tales by Dr. Seuss or the fourth and fifth Duck Songs by forestfire101 if you are not fond of animated gore [23] [24] [52]. Gotta give the writers kudos for being ambitious when it comes to the gory moments [54] [55] [59] [61]. [17]

Any other tree friends and Beans? Flaky and Toothy are only background characters, along with the Bean by the name of “Doofus” known as disturbing a nest of wasps is covered in them (even though they look more like fleas) and do not contribute much to the crossover, which is a little disappointing, but at least Flaky and Doofus are part of a rather creative stoplight gag at the end of the short [13] [15] [17]. There is also the Bean named “Botch” known for wearing moose antlers guiding the lowering of a new stoplight, only for it to impale the heads of Putz, Nutty, Doofus and Flaky. In the post-credit scene, Handy’s head lands on Botch’s in a graphic result. Toothy’s supposed survival makes me wonder if there will be a chapter of Happy Train Friends. I know it would be wiser to just leave the idea as a one-note special event, quite like how some of us believe that the idea of the Rugrats being preteens should have only been in “All Growed Up” to halt the Rugrats franchise with a memorable sendoff as a big part of a 10^th-anniversary celebration [67] [68] [69] [70], but who knows when Lifty and Shifty will hijack the next train [53]? And who knows when Clod will provoke Flippy into a duel [15] [55]?

Considering how short Happy Tree Friends is [17], is it at least sweet? Well, in terms of shock value, there is a little predictability that is at least salvaged by a pinch of build-up in moments such as Handy getting decapitated by Lumpy’s failure to concentrate on halting the train near a closed tunnel and Putz’s lack of awareness of Nutty’s true intentions at first. Aside from that, other horrific moments are pretty unexpected, such as Stumble getting rolled up into a blob of flesh after stumbling on what no treadmill runner would want to feel, which is a little unbalanced with the previously mentioned fatalities, but the imbalance is at least not blatant. Kudos to the crossover not occurring right away as the Beans arrive on the train after the title card’s appearance, thus being a little more effective when it comes to combining the two cartoons. Even as a crossover, the plot of Happy Train Friends feels like a regular episode of Happy Tree Friends and it is understandable why the series is not every animation admirer’s glass of ice-cold lemonade...or in the webseries’ case, eyes-cold lemonade [54] [79] [80], but I am thankful that the writing is nowhere near as choppy and messy of the first season of Mr. Pickles in terms of shock factor and as previously mentioned, there is potential for a second chapter if the reception is successful [17] [81].

It can be argued that the crossover is not as impact as The Grim Adventures of KND due to how short it is, compared to the special that aired on Cartoon Network back in 2007 [17] [33], but like I said, there could be a second short featuring other Beans and tree friends to increase its credibility. Metro’s reminder to be safe around trains may have disregarded by blood and gore solely for shock factor in Happy Train Friends [15] [53] [54] [55] [60] [62], but at least the crossover is more reliable and impactful than “YouTube Copyright School” [17] [75]. [17]

Colourful and lacking frame rate issues, the animation is excellent [16] [17] [63]. The flow of the characters’ animation is elegant, even during the moments of their mutilations, aside from a few swift movements, like Nutty devouring all those jellybeans. The setting being a train arriving at two train stations, including one fittingly labelled as the train station in Dumbville is a good idea as the purpose of “Dumb Ways To Die” is to lead viewers into keeping railway safety in mind with a catchy song [15], despite the flak such a concept received [86]. The train station and railway backgrounds are bolder than the Summer backgrounds in The Duck Song 4 and the Autumn backgrounds in The Duck Song 5, but not as ambitious in terms of world-building [17] [23] [24]. Although the blood and gore are not as visually detailed as the injury details in Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, it is still impactful, considering how it is a crossover between two intellectual properties known for being gory and as previously mentioned, the brutality in Happy Tree Friends can been at least partially creative at times and you can tell which species’ blood is which as the tree critters have blood in a bold shade of red and the Beans’ blood is watermelon pink [15] [17] [54] [55] [59] [61]. Kudos to the animation team for their efforts [16] [17] [63], but we still need to be aware of recent issues in the animation industry and hope for some step-ups [4].

Bonus points for the design of Lumpy’s handheld gaming system that will pleasantly surprise an ‘80s kid or a Nintendo nerd who fondly remembers celebrating Mario’s 35^th anniversary [82] [89] [90], yet my fiancé knows not to text or play while driving. You may have noticed that the animation was a little choppier in the first season of the webisodes back in the day [55] [56] [57] [58] [60]. Now, so have I. The smoother framerate is quite an upgrade if you ask me [17] [59] [62]. [17]

If there ought to be a second crossover between Happy Tree Friends and Dumb Ways To Die that takes place after the events of this one, the backgrounds could be a little more ambitious in terms of world-building [17]. It always works for the Rings of Hell in Helluva Boss [39] [40] [41] [42] [43] [44], right? [17]

The auditory aspects of Happy Train Friends are also top-notch [17]. The first scene’s music is a cheery tune as an element of the harmless first impression the Happy Tree Friends series has had since 1999 [26] [54] [55] [62]. I like how the title card for the crossover consists of not only a spookily green palette, much like the logo for the crossover between Codename: Kids Next Door and The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy but an upbeat remix of the Happy Tree Friends theme song, quite like how The Sims 2: Seasons and The Sims 2: Bon Voyage provided their own versions of the neighbourhood theme of the base game [18] [19] [20] [31] [33], even though the original theme song has been considered irritating by some cartoon critics [80]. I adore the instrumental of the chorus of “Dumb Ways To Die” that plays when three Beans enter the train [15] [17]. We hear a variety of sound effects, from the nostalgic bleeps from Lumpy’s handheld gaming system strongly resembling a Game & Watch to the usual sounds of blood being shed in comical ways [82] [88] [89]. Even though the sounds of adorable characters getting killed off are unnerving, the audio of Happy Tree Friends is almost as expectational as the audio in Sonic X Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings, despite their entirely different motives [16] [17] [63] [96].

In terms of voice acting, the same gibberish and screams of pain and terror the tree friends are known for are applied to the Beans, which is a bit strange, considering how they remained mute in the dumb ways they died, but sang the chorus in the early 2010s music video they came from [15] [16] [17] [55] [56] [61]. One issue I have with the voice acting is the inconsistency of Stumble’s voice [15] [16] [17]. He sounds nearly as deep as Lumpy when he enters the train with Putz and Doofus, but his pitch changes during his tragic fate. It would not say it is as derailing as how Crimson in the second season of Helluva Boss could have sounded not too much like Moxxie, even though he is his father [39] [92] [93]. As always, no offence to the talented Richard Horvitz who voices both characters. [17]

Oh!  And let us not forget about the chime rising as the faces of Flay, Doofus and nutty's reappear on a stoplight, my favourite part of the crossover because of its creativity. [17]

As much as I adore Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, the animated series based on Green Eggs & Ham and Hazbin Hotel for different reasons [78] [87] [88] [94] [95], I am appreciative towards the efforts put into this bizarre experiment for its great animation and simple but passable plot [17]. I see some potential in a second chapter featuring some other characters from the properties as a result of Toothy apparently being the only one to survive the first, such as Giggles, Cuddles, Petunia, Sniffles, Splendid and Flippy from Happy Tree Friends and Dippy, Clod, Lax and Bonehead from Dumb Ways To Die [13] [56] [57], resulting in more red and watermelon pink blood being shed [17]. Too bad the “I Like Trains” dude from the asdfmovie series would not take Metro’s advice [71] [72] [73] [74], but at least we can [15]. There has been quite a lot of cartoonish craziness in 2024, including Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland [38], four Helluva Shorts and Happy Train Friends [14] [17] [45] [46] [47] [48]. If you ask me, watching Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl on Netflix could be a swell way to start 2025 [66], possibly the year when X, formerly known as “Twitter” could be the closest to ending up like MySpace and I do not doubt that there will be more cartoony craziness, including a revival of Phineas and Ferb on Disney+ throughout a new year of the snake [10] [34] [37] [51] [77] [99].

Do not tell me that this epilogue is a reference to that Valentine’s Day card Lisa Simpson gave to Ralph Wiggum [6]! Anyway, I am up for a competent follow-up to this crossover almost much as the second season of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft [78]. And no, she does not need AI and a boyfriend to be “fixed” [27]. Thank you very much. Until then, stay alert if you dare cross this year’s Haunted by Daylight event in Dead by Daylight [8] [9]. [17]

The Announcement Of An Animated Series Based On Midnight Sun Coming To Netflix

A few days ago, it was confirmed that an animated series based on Midnight Sun, a romance novel by Stephenie Meyer published four years ago is currently in development and is set to premiere on Netflix [11] [35] [51] [54] [65]. There is something convenient about the novel finally being published at the start of a new decade a dozen years after its progress was leaked as it introduced a new generation of teenage readers to the controversial but successful saga and gave its older fans a big dose of mid and late 2000s nostalgia, especially during a global pandemic [66] [72]. I recall some predictions I made sometime after the publication of Midnight Sun [66], yet I also know how vital it could be to reboot the saga with many changes that can make up for many things that were considered wrong with it, from Bella’s lack of ambition aside from her love for Edward to the problems with their relationship that will be explained later [80]. Plenty of us are skeptical about an animated adaption of a companion novel that is negatively received for a reason [11] [35] [51] [54], but there is still plenty of time to predict how an animated series based on the companion novel from Edward’s perspective could at least be considered better than the saga of films based on the four main novels [80].

As a writer, I hope that my current works will be considered a big step up from a Twilight creepypasta I wrote back in 2013 [71] [77]. And as someone who has discussed ways how a reboot of the saga can be a step up in the future twice [80], I am surprised at the confirmation of an animated adaptation of Midnight Sun in the works but a little concerned at the same time as plenty of us cannot forgive and forget [11] [35] [51] [64]. [65]

On neutral grounds, let us delve into how an upcoming adaptation can provide both faithfulness to the novel and at least some signs of being a minor step up from the films distributed by Summit Entertainment before two new kits for The Sims 4 get released [46] [47] [48] [49] [50] [52]. [61]

Now, do I hate Edward because of his reputation that has been considered a disgrace to both vampires and male love interests [80]? No. I just believe that his potential has been wasted by the actions that have caused him to be labelled as “abusive”, “creepy” and “stalkerish” [37] [44] [80]. On a lighter note, as baffling and bothersome as vampires like him sparkling in sunlight instead of disintegrating or losing their powers has been to critics [80], I still like to ask my fiancé if they sparkle in sunlight just for the heck of it. But interestingly, since Midnight Sun is even thicker than Twilight as it consists of more pages, there will be quite a lot more focus on Cullen’s backstory, his feelings towards Swan and so on [54]. Perhaps there could be a few flashbacks of all the previous high schools he attended throughout the year. I doubt that one of them would be Monster High though [33]. Chances are that my wish for the romance between a lion and a lamb will set up much better examples by having its toxic and abusive aspects removed will not be granted [80], but at least it is likely that Robert Pattinson will not reprise the role as he has expressed distaste in playing the part [56] [72], yet he apparently no longer considers bashing the books and films cool for the sake of proactivity [14].

Edward may not be the best love interest in literature, but please! Establish anything but a bland hentai adaption of Fifty Shades of Grey [16] [63]! Oh! And you know the times when he was called “gay” as a blatant insult [19], compared to the admiration of passable or exceptional representation of gay, bisexual and pansexual men these days [23] [25] [26] [30]? Why not make Edward bi-curious in a flashback scene? Welp, there goes the term “woke” being used as a crutch when it comes to critiquing again [73] [74]. [31] [Williams, 2024]

 
I still have nothing against Bella being clumsy and insecure [80], but it is likely that her fragile nature will still grind a feminist’s gears as she will once again be the damsel-in-distress since, as previously mentioned, Midnight Sun is simply a retelling of Twilight in her vampiric love interest’s perspective [54] [64] [65]. Perhaps there could be a little more backstory for her before she moved to Forks with her father or perhaps a sign that she could be a part werewolf, which is what some theorists have suspected [12]. Why not establish a secondary desire for Bella aside from how she would love to be a vampire like Edward as a notable difference between the companion novel and the animated series, not just for the sake of today’s standards of making young women more empowered in fiction [80]? It does not have to be preachy in pink as if she were a Barbie in Barbie Land though [4]. Despite the same criticism Bella is likely to receive as a character and a potential role girl for young girls again [64] [80], it is also likely that a few theorists will still stand by how they believe that she could be autistic due to her social awkwardness and sensitivities and a certain part of me appreciates that as I never hated her about as much as I never hated Bubsy the Bobcat and a certain stigma regarding misdiagnosis needs to be abolished [69] [70] [80] [81].
 

One can always look forward to the animated series based on Minecraft instead if they are not fond of an animated incarnation of Bella getting herself into danger and needing a vampiric hero to save her [32] [52] [73] [74]. I am sure we can be rational when it comes to disapproving of her character rather than just calling her a “b***h” or a “sl**” like some high school bully [19]. [31] [Williams, 2024]

And yes, I believe there will be an animated interpretation of Jacob Black, a good friend of Bella’s in a scene or two [52]. But sorry, Team Jacob. Midnight Sun is Edward’s love story [54] [65]. Besides, the love triangle did not fully commence until Jacob got a haircut [50] [52], but some theorists can still stand by the possibility of Bella being a part werewolf for the sake of some explanation and filling in a specific plot hole [12]. [55]

One way the Harry Potter books and films one up the Twilight books and films is how the supporting roles in the Harry Potter series gain a little growth in [8] their own ways and that does not seem to be the case in the Twilight series [17] [18] [47] [50]. Surely, there can be a few opportunities to let the supporting characters, such as the other members of the Cullen clan stand out with a little more depth than in the live action films based on Meyer’s vampiric saga though [47] [48] [49] [50] [52]. For example, featuring Alice Cullen’s backstory in one episode would make up for the missed opportunity to do so in the first live action film based on the first novel [52], especially since Midnight Sun provides some more about the Cullen coven besides Edward [54], yet there was a fan film based on Alice’s origin known as “The Mary Alice Brandon File” that reminds me of the asylum in Alice: Madness Returns Storybook [1] [13] [57] [58]. Aside from some missed opportunities that can be recreated in the animated series based on Midnight Sun, there was a greatly missed opportunity to make the portrayals of Bella’s other friends besides Jacob Black more impactful in the movies [47] [50], but perhaps Meyer could write a little more about their own love stories outside of Edward and Bella’s in a new novella someday [66]. Well, at least that is what I would do if I were her.

If you have watched the fan film based on Alice’s backstory that was voted as the best out of a compilation of seven short films known as “The Storytellers: New Voices of The Twilight Saga” [57] [58], what are your thoughts on it? Feel free to let me know. [57]

 
I believe that the animation style ought to be adapted from the art in The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide and the graphic novels based on Twilight and New Moon crafted by Young Kim or in a similar style that is at least rather realistic as a more cartoony style [31] [55] [61] [66] [80], such as the iconic style of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss, two animated black comedies would probably not fit the angsty essences of Edward and Bella’s controversial but ultimately iconic romance [24] [27] [29]. I suspect that the animation in the upcoming animated series based on Midnight Sun will be about as exceptional as the anime-like animation in Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, the shortly upcoming animated series coming to Netflix that will highlight a new chapter for Lara Croft [36] [78] [79], but of course, impressive animation will not overshadow issues with writing as I pointed out the pros AND the cons of the plots in “Mission: Antarctica” and “Weeaboo-Boo”, the second and third minisodes of Helluva Shorts [28] [29] [67] [68] [75] [76]. Despite the likeliness of not a single lesson learned from what made the romance between the vampire and his spider monkey infamously problematic [80], but with enough skill put into the animation alongside passable voice acting, its outcome can be more expressive than the overall acting and more effective than some of the special effects in the live action films based on the four original novels [47] [48] [49] [50] [52] [80].

The animation style of an animated adaptation of Midnight Sun ought to be quite gritty, especially for a recreation of the rather memorable baseball scene in the first live action film based on the tetralogy [11] [35] [51] [52]. One can always look forward to Ms. Croft on her journey of further self-discovery this October if they do not fancy the idea of a lamb being too dependent on a lion [36] [52]. [36]

Despite how I believe that Vivienne Medrano’s iconic art style would not fit an adapted retelling of Twilight from an angsty vampire’s perspective [23] [24] [28] [29], there have been some issues regarding the relationship between Stolas and Blitzo in Helluva Boss that I hope can be resolved at some point and there will probably be an official parody of the saga in the Hellaverse eventually [9] [23] [24] [25] [26] [27] [30]. If you still love the Twilight saga to this day and are hyped for a new animated interpretation on Netflix [5] [11] [35] [40] [51], good for you. On the other shimmering hand, if an animated series based on a version of Twilight written from Edward’s perspective does not sound like your type of love story [8] [64], you can always discover the most dateable qualities of about one hundred characters based on various household objects in Date Everything this October [38]. In the meantime, PlayStation players will carry on being cuted out by the adorable Astro and his fellow bots cosplaying as various characters from successful PlayStation titles, including Jak and Daxter from the series by the same names and Nathan Drake from the Uncharted franchise in Astro Bot for the PlayStation 5 [10] [22] [41] [42] [43] [45]. Speaking of video game characters cosplaying, remember when some Rabbids dressed up as Edward, Bella, Laurnet and the pack of shape-shifters [50] [62]? During the wait for the official posters and teasers for an animated series based on Midnight Sun [11] [35] [51], we can still be reasonable when it comes to being critical of the Twilight saga rather than just simply labelling it as “lame” and “emo” and refrain from verbally bullying those who still consider themselves Twihards and berating Stephenie Meyer for writing and publishing the books in the first place as a sign of maturing and blossoming from past mistakes [2] [3] [14] [20] [21] [34].

The same applies to old and new Twihards when it comes to handling opinions on the series that are not concluded to theirs [3] [7]. And yes, the same also applies to both rabid fans and toxic haters of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss who need to leave each other alone for Satan’s sake [6] [15] [39]! On a lighter note, I shall be hopeful for the fourth minisode of Helluva Shorts before simmers encounter the reveal of the Life and Death expansion pack for The Sims 4 [44]. And no, I doubt that it will be a crossover with Life and Death, the alternative universe Meyer created in honour of the 10th anniversary of Twilight [53] [72]. Until then, please refrain from any hatefulness towards Stephenie Meyer and the creative team of the forthcoming adaptation of Midnight Sun and let us wish them the best [66] [80]. [59]
