Is Shrek 5 Doomed To Be The Ogre’s Downfall?

Remember watching Shronkey’s 12D, ordering a meal at Shrek’s Pizza or hunting for treasure with him on the PlayStation [6] [15] [29]? The Shrek 5 cast announcement was released on the Pokémon day of the announcement of Mummy Pig from Peppa Pig expecting a third piglet on Good Morning Britain and the release of the third and final A Minecraft Movie trailer [12] [15] [39] [40] [41] [46]. Quite unfortunately, plenty of fellow fans are not thrilled at the brief teaser of Shrek’s forthcoming comeback [47], but just because there are some disappointing aspects in a cast announcement, does not mean that all hope for a beloved franchise to progress into a pentalogy without jumping the shark (boy and lava girl [16]) is lost [50] [51] [53][54]. The same applies to how baffled Minecraft players were at the teaser trailer for A Minecraft Movie but eventually saw better potential in the other trailers [48] [55] [56] [57] [58]. While Barbie doll collectors acknowledge the Career of the Year for Mattel’s plastic starlet highlighting women in the music industry in association with She Is The Music [2] [3], let us proceed to discuss whether or not Shrek 5 would provide the right way to revive the main film series as the same hope applies to Toy Story 5 [38], even though it is strongly believed that those follow-ups will not be as impactful as Shrek 2, Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3 [28] [43] [44].

Shrek 5 was originally set to be released at the beginning of July 2026 but was delayed in favour of marketing the third Minions movie on that day instead [8] [33]. Without further ado, let us address the elephant in the room…or in this case, the dragon guarding the castle [27] [28]. [33]

Understandably, there have been some less than easy-going reactions to the new animation style for the beloved cast of anti-Disney takes on many fairy tales [27] [28] [31] [46] [47]. The characters’ movements and body proportions make them more cartoony, compared to the realism and liveliness of the previous four movies [27] [28] [30] [31]. It is disappointing that the official visuals of Shrek 5 in the cast announcement are not as artistically outstanding as the incredible animation in Puss In Boots: The Last Wish [25], which might have been a cost-cutting decision, but the redesigns within a new animation style, especially for a new and younger audience are not that bad [46]. They could be worse as they are not as drastic as the art style in the second season of American Dragon: Jake Long and the off-putting style of the main cast of the Scooby-Doo franchise in Be Cool, Scooby-Doo [11]. What matters more is the fifth film must provide some intriguing new character development, especially for Shrek as he vows to count his blessings after the events of Shrek Forever After and for Puss In Boots as the same mistakes regarding his egoistical nature in The Adventures of Puss in Boots must not be made again, especially after we witnessed his incredible character growth in Puss In Boots: The Last Wish [26] [30] [45] [50] [51] [53] [54].
 

Well, at least the cast of the three main characters are reprising their roles; Mike Meyers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey and Cameron Diaz as Fiona [33] [46]. And at least the characters’ heads are not insanely huge [6]… [46]

I’m sorry, but did the joke really have to be Shrek seeing himself in what you will see on the internet as he scrolls through some uncanny samples as if the Magic Mirror was an iPad [46]? I know that the big guy became meme material sometime after the reception of Shrek Forever After [4] [5], but surely, there can be jokes that can be considered more creatively stimulating in the fifth chapter than the kind of meme culture humour the reboot of The Powerpuff Girls was called out for [59] [60]. Remember Shrek The Third being called out for its reliance on pop culture references, along with how uninspired the interpretation of Worcestershire being a generically portrayed but mean-spirited North American high school is, despite its medieval aesthetic [5] [31]? Jokes and emotional moments involving modern touch screen technology and social media work better in cartoons established in the late 2010s and early 2020s, such as Helluva Boss [18] [19] [20] [21] [22], but aside from considerably better humour in Shrek 5, possibly including some devious innuendo for older members of the audience similar to such samples in the first Shrek film [27] [53] [54], there ought to be some elevating character growth, such as Fiona becoming an activist for ogres’ rights to live happily ever after and Felicia, Shrek and Fiona's daughter for the reason that will be explained in a jiffy [46] [53] [54].

What were they thinking?! What is Pinocchio’s motivation to be involved? At least Fiona seems...pleased. [46]

It looks like Shrek 5 is set over a decade after Shrek Forever After as Felicia is now a teenager [46], much like how Peaches, Manny and Ellie’s daughter had grown into one in Ice Age: Continental Drift [14]. She is voiced by Zendaya, the actress known for her roles as MJ from Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home and Chani from the Dune duology [9] [10] [34] [35] [36]. I understand ageing up a young character to give them some growth, but chances are that the outcome of said growth could become about as clichéd and predictable as some aspects of Tommy Pickles, his younger brother, their older cousin and their friends as preteens in All Grown Up! [26], as well as Peaches’ resentment towards Manny’s overprotectiveness in Ice Age: Continental Drift [14]. On a lighter note, I am curious to see what personality traits the new teenaged Felicia and her two brothers will express, along with their evolved bonds with Puss and Donkey, their uncle figures throughout Shrek 5 [31] [46]. Logically, the same adolescence could apply to the six Dronkeys as Donkey’s new design consists of a certain sign of his ageing and Arthur Pendragon, the current king of Far Far Away in his late twenties or early thirties could give them some advice quite like the advice Loona gave to Octavia in the second episode of the second season of Helluva Boss [21] [32] [33] [50] [51].

While the supporting stars, including Pinocchio, are highly likely to remain their usual selves in honour of comic relief [27] [28] [30] [31] [46], a teenaged Felicia is likely to have a similar personality to the teenaged incarnation of Peaches from the Ice Age franchise for the sake of likeability [14]. At least that is what I speculate. [46]

The answer to the question regarding Shrek 5’s potential so far cannot be confirmed yet [46] [47]. At least the potential of A Minecraft Movie improved with more action and slightly more appealing visuals and effects in the second and third trailers [48] [57] [58], but as previously mentioned, there is still hope that the ogre’s return to the big screen will be better than we expect, especially with top-notch writing [50] [51] [53] [54]. But alas, the prime motivation for establishing a revival would be nostalgia baiting that would be the main reason for another box-office success [5], yet there still needs to be much more than a rehash of the past. Shrek 5 is set to be released next Christmas after the opening of a new Universal Studios Resort known as “Universal Kids Resort” in Texas and the theatrical release of Toy Story 5 in 2026 [33] [42] [46]. In the meantime, Poké players are hyped for new episodes of Pokémon Concierge on Netflix this September and the return to Kalos in Pokémon Legends: Z-A in late 2025 [38] [39] [40] [41]. And of course, the 20^th anniversary of Stephenie Meyer’s controversial but iconic romantasy tale known as “Twilight” will be celebrated [7] [13]. As for Shrek, we can reflect on how far he has come since the children’s book written by William Steig as many of us can agree that a seemingly unnecessary fifth film would still be better than a misguided reboot [4] [17] [50] [51] [53] [54].

And one more thing, it is cool if you are ultimately excited for Shrek returning to the big screen in late 2026 [46]. Just because you may not have the same critical take as someone else, does not mean that they should gatekeep you for having a positive opinion. Trust me, I know how it feels to be berated for an opinion [49]. I may have distanced myself from creepypastas for a similar reason and another [23] [37], but at least I can still be hopeful for the third season of Helluva Boss being considered another salvation in terms of screenwriting as I expand my own path as a writer [1] [24] [52]. The Announcement Of An Animated Series Based On Midnight Sun Coming To Netflix

A few days ago, it was confirmed that an animated series based on Midnight Sun, a romance novel by Stephenie Meyer published four years ago is currently in development and is set to premiere on Netflix [11] [35] [51] [54] [65]. There is something convenient about the novel finally being published at the start of a new decade a dozen years after its progress was leaked as it introduced a new generation of teenage readers to the controversial but successful saga and gave its older fans a big dose of mid and late 2000s nostalgia, especially during a global pandemic [66] [72]. I recall some predictions I made sometime after the publication of Midnight Sun [66], yet I also know how vital it could be to reboot the saga with many changes that can make up for many things that were considered wrong with it, from Bella’s lack of ambition aside from her love for Edward to the problems with their relationship that will be explained later [80]. Plenty of us are skeptical about an animated adaption of a companion novel that is negatively received for a reason [11] [35] [51] [54], but there is still plenty of time to predict how an animated series based on the companion novel from Edward’s perspective could at least be considered better than the saga of films based on the four main novels [80].

As a writer, I hope that my current works will be considered a big step up from a Twilight creepypasta I wrote back in 2013 [71] [77]. And as someone who has discussed ways how a reboot of the saga can be a step up in the future twice [80], I am surprised at the confirmation of an animated adaptation of Midnight Sun in the works but a little concerned at the same time as plenty of us cannot forgive and forget [11] [35] [51] [64]. [65]

On neutral grounds, let us delve into how an upcoming adaptation can provide both faithfulness to the novel and at least some signs of being a minor step up from the films distributed by Summit Entertainment before two new kits for The Sims 4 get released [46] [47] [48] [49] [50] [52]. [61]

Now, do I hate Edward because of his reputation that has been considered a disgrace to both vampires and male love interests [80]? No. I just believe that his potential has been wasted by the actions that have caused him to be labelled as “abusive”, “creepy” and “stalkerish” [37] [44] [80]. On a lighter note, as baffling and bothersome as vampires like him sparkling in sunlight instead of disintegrating or losing their powers has been to critics [80], I still like to ask my fiancé if they sparkle in sunlight just for the heck of it. But interestingly, since Midnight Sun is even thicker than Twilight as it consists of more pages, there will be quite a lot more focus on Cullen’s backstory, his feelings towards Swan and so on [54]. Perhaps there could be a few flashbacks of all the previous high schools he attended throughout the year. I doubt that one of them would be Monster High though [33]. Chances are that my wish for the romance between a lion and a lamb will set up much better examples by having its toxic and abusive aspects removed will not be granted [80], but at least it is likely that Robert Pattinson will not reprise the role as he has expressed distaste in playing the part [56] [72], yet he apparently no longer considers bashing the books and films cool for the sake of proactivity [14].

Edward may not be the best love interest in literature, but please! Establish anything but a bland hentai adaption of Fifty Shades of Grey [16] [63]! Oh! And you know the times when he was called “gay” as a blatant insult [19], compared to the admiration of passable or exceptional representation of gay, bisexual and pansexual men these days [23] [25] [26] [30]? Why not make Edward bi-curious in a flashback scene? Welp, there goes the term “woke” being used as a crutch when it comes to critiquing again [73] [74]. [31] [Williams, 2024]

 
I still have nothing against Bella being clumsy and insecure [80], but it is likely that her fragile nature will still grind a feminist’s gears as she will once again be the damsel-in-distress since, as previously mentioned, Midnight Sun is simply a retelling of Twilight in her vampiric love interest’s perspective [54] [64] [65]. Perhaps there could be a little more backstory for her before she moved to Forks with her father or perhaps a sign that she could be a part werewolf, which is what some theorists have suspected [12]. Why not establish a secondary desire for Bella aside from how she would love to be a vampire like Edward as a notable difference between the companion novel and the animated series, not just for the sake of today’s standards of making young women more empowered in fiction [80]? It does not have to be preachy in pink as if she were a Barbie in Barbie Land though [4]. Despite the same criticism Bella is likely to receive as a character and a potential role girl for young girls again [64] [80], it is also likely that a few theorists will still stand by how they believe that she could be autistic due to her social awkwardness and sensitivities and a certain part of me appreciates that as I never hated her about as much as I never hated Bubsy the Bobcat and a certain stigma regarding misdiagnosis needs to be abolished [69] [70] [80] [81].
 

One can always look forward to the animated series based on Minecraft instead if they are not fond of an animated incarnation of Bella getting herself into danger and needing a vampiric hero to save her [32] [52] [73] [74]. I am sure we can be rational when it comes to disapproving of her character rather than just calling her a “b***h” or a “sl**” like some high school bully [19]. [31] [Williams, 2024]

And yes, I believe there will be an animated interpretation of Jacob Black, a good friend of Bella’s in a scene or two [52]. But sorry, Team Jacob. Midnight Sun is Edward’s love story [54] [65]. Besides, the love triangle did not fully commence until Jacob got a haircut [50] [52], but some theorists can still stand by the possibility of Bella being a part werewolf for the sake of some explanation and filling in a specific plot hole [12]. [55]

One way the Harry Potter books and films one up the Twilight books and films is how the supporting roles in the Harry Potter series gain a little growth in [8] their own ways and that does not seem to be the case in the Twilight series [17] [18] [47] [50]. Surely, there can be a few opportunities to let the supporting characters, such as the other members of the Cullen clan stand out with a little more depth than in the live action films based on Meyer’s vampiric saga though [47] [48] [49] [50] [52]. For example, featuring Alice Cullen’s backstory in one episode would make up for the missed opportunity to do so in the first live action film based on the first novel [52], especially since Midnight Sun provides some more about the Cullen coven besides Edward [54], yet there was a fan film based on Alice’s origin known as “The Mary Alice Brandon File” that reminds me of the asylum in Alice: Madness Returns Storybook [1] [13] [57] [58]. Aside from some missed opportunities that can be recreated in the animated series based on Midnight Sun, there was a greatly missed opportunity to make the portrayals of Bella’s other friends besides Jacob Black more impactful in the movies [47] [50], but perhaps Meyer could write a little more about their own love stories outside of Edward and Bella’s in a new novella someday [66]. Well, at least that is what I would do if I were her.

I believe that the animation style ought to be adapted from the art in The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide and the graphic novels based on Twilight and New Moon crafted by Young Kim or in a similar style that is at least rather realistic as a more cartoony style [31] [55] [61] [66] [80], such as the iconic style of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss, two animated black comedies would probably not fit the angsty essences of Edward and Bella’s controversial but ultimately iconic romance [24] [27] [29]. I suspect that the animation in the upcoming animated series based on Midnight Sun will be about as exceptional as the anime-like animation in Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, the shortly upcoming animated series coming to Netflix that will highlight a new chapter for Lara Croft [36] [78] [79], but of course, impressive animation will not overshadow issues with writing as I pointed out the pros AND the cons of the plots in “Mission: Antarctica” and “Weeaboo-Boo”, the second and third minisodes of Helluva Shorts [28] [29] [67] [68] [75] [76]. One can always look forward to Ms. Croft on her journey of further self-discovery this October if they do not fancy the idea of a lamb being too dependent on a lion [36] [52]. [36]

Despite how I believe that Vivienne Medrano’s iconic art style would not fit an adapted retelling of Twilight from an angsty vampire’s perspective [23] [24] [28] [29], there have been some issues regarding the relationship between Stolas and Blitzo in Helluva Boss that I hope can be resolved at some point and there will probably be an official parody of the saga in the Hellaverse eventually [9] [23] [24] [25] [26] [27] [30]. If you still love the Twilight saga to this day and are hyped for a new animated interpretation on Netflix [5] [11] [35] [40] [51], good for you. On the other shimmering hand, if an animated series based on a version of Twilight written from Edward’s perspective does not sound like your type of love story [8] [64], you can always discover the most dateable qualities of about one hundred characters based on various household objects in Date Everything this October [38]. In the meantime, PlayStation players will carry on being cuted out by the adorable Astro and his fellow bots cosplaying as various characters from successful PlayStation titles, including Jak and Daxter from the series by the same names and Nathan Drake from the Uncharted franchise in Astro Bot for the PlayStation 5 [10] [22] [41] [42] [43] [45]. Speaking of video game characters cosplaying, remember when some Rabbids dressed up as Edward, Bella, Laurnet and the pack of shape-shifters [50] [62]? During the wait for the official posters and teasers for an animated series based on Midnight Sun [11] [35] [51], we can still be reasonable when it comes to being critical of the Twilight saga rather than just simply labelling it as “lame” and “emo” and refrain from verbally bullying those who still consider themselves Twihards and berating Stephenie Meyer for writing and publishing the books in the first place as a sign of maturing and blossoming from past mistakes [2] [3] [14] [20] [21] [34].

The same applies to old and new Twihards when it comes to handling opinions on the series that are not concluded to theirs [3] [7]. And yes, the same also applies to both rabid fans and toxic haters of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss who need to leave each other alone for Satan’s sake [6] [15] [39]! On a lighter note, I shall be hopeful for the fourth minisode of Helluva Shorts before simmers encounter the reveal of the Life and Death expansion pack for The Sims 4 [44]. And no, I doubt that it will be a crossover with Life and Death, the alternative universe Meyer created in honour of the 10th anniversary of Twilight [53] [72]. Until then, please refrain from any hatefulness towards Stephenie Meyer and the creative team of the forthcoming adaptation of Midnight Sun and let us wish them the best [66] [80]. [59]
