Lackadaisy - Cats, Cocktails and Classy Cartoon Credibility

This is an analysis and a review of an animated pilot that contains content aimed at older audiences, including:

It all started back in the Summer of 2006 with a comic created by Tracy Butler [22]. Throughout its run, the popular webcomic series known as “Lackadaisy” won a few awards because of its critical reception [63]. E3 may have been cancelled this year [28], but the pilot for an animated series based on the Lackadaisy comics was uploaded on YouTube the day before that [35], much to my interest. The production of the short film was announced back in early 2020 alongside the reveal of its introduction in progress as a teaser animatic and had been crowdfunded throughout three years of its gradual development [22] [30]. Is the wait of three years after its announcement and crowdfunding, most notably from loyal fans of the webcomics worth it? It takes some time and dedication to develop a new adaption of an intellectual property with the most engaging execution possible whilst its creator’s perspective is up to date [70] [71] [72] [73]. If only that can be achieved to produce an R-rated animated series based on the Deadpool comics [67]. As a teetotaller, an admirer of animation and a Nintendo nerd who adores another sakura-themed event with Katie in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp [49] [51], I, LauraOnDuty, shall review Lackadaisy [35]! 

Lackadaisy has been around for nearly seventeen years, starting with the first webcomic in 2006 [22] [63]. As much as I aim to not merge claims with dated views solely to convince readers to agree with me [5], I am up for new adaption of intellectual properties being commenced [31] [35]. [63]

The short film is set in St Louis, Missouri 1927, which explains the style of the characters’ attires, the designs of the cars and the use of candlestick telephones [1] [22] [31] [35]. The major difference is that the setting is populated by anthropomorphic cats [29]. Alcohol is outlawed, which would make Homer Simpson go crazy aside from no television [16], yet still provides some historical accuracy [6] [21] [22]. Despite the illegalisation of alcohol that began in 1920, three cats aim to challenge the law by hunting for booze and bringing it to bootlegging operation for a dying business [31] [35], somehow like how Sly Cooper and his two friends, Bentley and Murray would steal from other criminals to honour his family name, despite the risk of getting caught by Inspector Carmelita Fox [57]. Who knows when alcoholic beverages will be legalised again but under a few conditions? A memorable series’ finale set in 1933 [6]? I do not doubt that if there will be an animated series based on the webcomics after the overall reception of the pilot [35], there will be notable differences between each episode and the webcomics [63], much like how there are differences between the Spider-Man comics and the films based on them [60].

Is it any wonder why Talking Angela sang a song about the glamour of the 1920s and described that era of time as “the cat’s meow” [13]? I suppose we ought to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the events of Lackadaisy in 2027? But before that, we can gather around and celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first webcomic in Summer 2026 with Tracy Butler [63]. [35]

Roark Rickaby, also known as “Rocky” is a cat who has a talent for playing the violin [35]. He is voiced by Michael Kovach who also voiced Angel Dust in the pilot for Hazbin Hotel [22] [31] [33] [38]. Even though Rocky sounds American [35], his bio states that he is Irish, which leads me to conclude that he is Irish-American [36], like how Linguini’s accent in Ratatouille could make him French-American [52]. As for his personality, it is certainly striking, making him the pilot’s comic relief [35]. His wisecracking jabs at his cousin vaguely remind me of Angel Dust’s snarky nature in the Hazbin Hotel pilot [38]. Aside from Rocky’s comical nature which includes him being reckless at times [35], he is quite charismatic as he recites a poem while playing his violin in the intro, making him one of my favourite characters since I am fond of and skilled in poetry as well [74]. The way to describe his overall intelligence is…quite complicated to say the least, considering how careless he seemed with chucking sticks of dynamite when reciting his second poem in the pilot [29] [35]. Perhaps, when the pilot leads to an animated series, Rocky can take some time to develop a relationship with another character who will be explained later, which can enrich his likeability beyond his antiheroism [36]. 

And I thought MC Skat Kat was charming, poetic and quirky [50]! [35]

Rocky is accompanied by two other cats named “Freckle” and “Ivy”. At the age of eighteen [29], Ivy Pepper seems quite a team leader, calling Rocky out for distracting himself during their assignment [35]. Freckle’s real name is “Calvin McMurray” [29]. He can be annoyed by his cousin Rocky and apologetic and polite to Ivy at times [35]. He is less confident than Rocky as shown by how uneasy he seemed when being given a rifle…until he goes right ahead and fires a lot of shots, laughing menacingly yet he behaves more rationally with a pistol after the car crashes. After all, Freckles was quite frantic as he rushed to Ivy’s aid during the second ambush, showing how noble he can be as the straight man of the group. I also wonder if there will be a moment of Ivy performing in a yellow flapper dress in an animated series based on the webcomics in a few years’ time [34]. Especially during the trio’s hiding after a wild car chase scene, I sensed the potential of Freckle and Ivy forming a romantic relationship after the events of the pilot [35]. More of Freckle and Ivy’s personalities ought to stand out if an animated series ought to be established.

Why not let Freckle and Ivy’s post-pilot relationship bloom like a duet of roses? And why not make Princess Aurora’s dress green [44]? [35]

Anything to say about Mordecai other than the fact that he is NOT a bluejay who works at a park [7]? Well, if you thought spending five nights at Candy’s as a security guard was intense [15], he is the leader of a gang who tries to ambush the trio with the use of guns [35]. He is the most serious out of the antagonistic trio, being the strong silent type who hardly smiles like Shadow the Hedgehog [55]. He also seems quite business-minded as he later has a phone conversation with who appears to be their boss after a scene starting with the portrayal of another character who, again, will be explained later [35]. I am somewhat convinced that the boss who smokes a cigar in his office will not be evil as Crimson from “Exes and Oohs”, the latest episode of Helluva Boss [39]. Aside from how menacing Nicodeme is, he is protective of his sister Serafine, lunging at her to save her from one of the sticks of dynamite [35]. Serafine is just as ruthless, making her and Nico two sinister siblings, just like Candy and Cindy from Five Nights At Candy’s [17] [18]. Best of luck to Greg the Grim Reaper from Conker’s Bad Fur Day and Conker Live and Reloaded when the gang’s time comes [11] [35].

No! Please don’t shoot my beloved reader, Mordecai! [35]

Did Nico swallow a piece of glass during the car chase scene? That cannot be good in real life… [35]

Mitzi May seems quite depressed regarding the current state of Little Daisy Café [35], quite like how Charlie felt about the public backlash against her idea of running a hotel for sinners to be redeemed in the pilot for Hazbin Hotel [38]. Mitzi’s voice and attire remind me of Tiana in her awesome musical number about being close to making her dream come true from The Princess and the Frog [14]. As the current owner of a bootlegging operation named “Lackadaisy”, she is also the widow of its previous owner [29]. Moreover, she is also rather business-minded, advising a bartender to try and appear more approachable to customers. Even though I can tell that she misses her husband by how she imagines his ghost touching her shoulder, I suppose she can eventually have feelings for Rocky within a moment of character development in the animated series. Mitzi could be the most relatable character of the pilot to many of us, especially by how she imagines the restaurant eventually becoming a success, which could possibly be associated with alcohol becoming legal again in a few years’ time. Moreover, I would consider her my other favourite character due to her reliability and similarities to Tiana and Charlie [14] [38].

Do you currently see a bit of you in Mrs. May? The thing to do is never give up on what you love, no matter how hard it seems. [35]

Anything to say about the supporting felines at Little Daisy Cafe? Viktor’s occupation as a bartender and grouchiness vaguely remind me of Husk from Hazbin Hotel [35] [38]. Is it me or could the handsome Dorian Zibowski, also known as “Zib” be gay or bisexual due to how he offered to serenade Sedgewick Sable in a rather flirtatious manner at the bar? [35] Wick is indeed quite a sophisticated fellow, but what sort of post-pilot character progression will await him? J.J. is another comic relief character as he plays his trombone at the right times to us but not to the other cats. There is also a cat on the stage in the background who can play the cello, just like Tom in the Tom & Jerry cartoon known as “Solid Serenade” [62]. Aside from the supporting characters whose roles could be more effective in an animated series [35], along with the appearances of other characters from the comics making appearances in its episodes, such as the Arbogasts and Dr. Leo Quackenbush [29], it ought to try and balance focuses on the male characters with focuses on the female characters throughout its run, which is what Helluva Boss seems to lack most of the time but could eventually achieve and truly show in a third season [59] [75] [76].

Care to join the band, monochrome Nyan Cat wearing sunglasses [21]? As the voice actress for three characters in a fanmade audio series based on Cluedo [19] [20], I would say that the voice acting for Lackadaisy is top-notch. [35]

I am spellbound by the masterful quality of the animation that was present throughout the pilot. You think Lackadaisy being set in the late 1920s will result in it being all black and white and consisting of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and Cuphead vibes [45] [58]? Think again! The characters’ eyes stand out quite mesmerisingly and their colour palettes are quite vibrant, especially at Little Daisy Café as they move as livelily as the characters in Bad Luck Jack [42], even though some outlines for drawings and animating them during development can be faintly spotted sometimes [35]. A notable example of the exceptional lighting and shading effects enrich the chaotic nature of the car chase scene and the tension in Sable Stone & Quarry Inc.. The bar and stage at Little Daisy Cafe are even more illuminated that the one at the Happy Hotel in the pilot for Hazbin Hotel [38]. Thanks to more than one-hundred-and-sixty artists across the world [10] [48] [56], including some who have worked on certain projects at SpindleHorse [37], the whole experience is almost like a mature Western equivalent of The Cat Returns [35] [46] [47]. Really, if only Cats was animated in a similar fashion rather than a live-action confusion that tried to emulate the stage musical experience a little too well [8] [9] [35] [60]. 

The progress of the animation in Lackadaisy is pretty much like the progress of the animation for an episode of Helluva Boss [2] [3] [32]. However, the animation in Lackadaisy looks a little more advanced as the movements are even smoother, much like in Moxxie’s hallucination in “Truth Seekers” [35] [41]. Of course, the progress of animating would differ depending on the complexity and such [43]. Even though I would suggest trying to completely conceal outlines in an animated series based on the Lackadaisy comics [35] [63], the beautifully complex animation in the pilot is about as praiseworthy as the animation in the first and second seasons of Green Eggs and Ham on Netflix [64] [65] [68] [69] [77] [78]. [35]

There are some effects, such as smoke from car engines and cigarettes, the sparks from Ricky’s violin playing in the enchanting backgrounds in the introduction and fireflies hovering in the shadowy woodland [35]. As previously stated, the time the events are set in explains the designs of the characters’ attires and the cars. And did I mention that the character designs kind of remind me of Kitten Catfe [23] [24] [25] [26] [27]? [35]

What else is there to say about this animated masterpiece [35]? Let us start with the humour, which is obviously not the raunchy kind like in Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss [38] [39] [40] [41]. However, there is some wittiness merged into a chaotic moment, which is, of course, Rocky being an utter maniac on a crane as he pulls a Cherri Bomb on us [35] [38]. The moment when Mitzi and Ivy try the McCoy reminds me of certain expressiveness within the animation of Helluva Boss [35] [39] [40] [41]. I also tittered when Ivy states that the trio’s car had been fixed but it collapses outside of the café [35]. As also previously mentioned, J.J.’s trombone is a fitting touch for certain moments for the audience but quite irritating to the other members of Lackadaisy. What elevates the pilot’s credibility even higher is the magnificent use of audio, from the soothing sounds of the woodland that consists of the croaks of frogs and the chirps of crickets to the steady creaking of the Little Daisy Cafe sign. Kudos to the audio department as well! With extraordinary animation combined with great humour and excellently produced audio, the Lackadaisy pilot cannot be recommended enough [35].

The humour and audio in the pilot further elevate the mood of a fictional interpretation of life without legal alcohol consumption in 1927 [6] [31]. [35]

In conclusion, Lackadaisy might end up being adapted into a television series on a streaming service a few years after the acclaim of the pilot [35], just like Hazbin Hotel [4] [70] [71] [72] [73]. Both properties have a cast of likeable characters, undeniably incredible animation and an engaging premise that beams in originality [35] [38]. Tracy Butler and her creative team at Iron Circus Animation deserve a lot of praise for the hard work and dedication put into the Lackadaisy pilot [22] [35]. Aside from Hazbin Hotel [4], I shall also look forward to watching the official trailer for Deadpool 3 which is likely to be revealed later this year [79]. Even though toxicity on Twitter almost ruined Helluva Boss for me [66], I shall look forward to the rest of its second season as well [39], perhaps along with an official webcomic series [75] [76]. Sadly, not all pilots have evolved into an animated series [54] [55], but it is highly likely that the Lackadaisy pilot will be soon approved by an entertainment company like A24 and an animated series with some notable changes will be taken into consideration [4] [35]. Furthermore, I might as well analyse the webcomic series and see how an animated series can honour its legacy at some point after the acclaim of the pilot [63]. Lackadaisy is truly the cat’s meow [13]!

This generation can be…less favourable than the ‘80s and ‘90s at times but let us be grateful for engaging new adaptions to admire and adore [12]. Tracy Butler’s property has come a long way since the first issue of the webcomic series [22] [63]. To be honest, I have never fully read the webcomics before. Nevertheless, I am considering the opportunity to review them for a follow-up article later this year. Stay tuned! [35]

High And Hellish Hopes For Hazbin Hotel From A24

Howdy, hazbeans! It has been almost three years since I was damned to a crazy interpretation of Hell by “That’s Entertainment”, the pilot of Hazbin Hotel and about a year since the release of its official Latin American Spanish dub [31] [43] [56]. Despite a few issues that have resulted in some talent hazbeans getting off the stage before packing their bags [2] [48], I still feel welcome in my damnation for how undeniably unique the premise is, along with how creative and informative I can be as a damned soul [5] [6] [86] [87] [88]. Ever since the confirmation of a television taking place after the events of “That’s Entertainment” under the cooperation A24 [1], many hazbeans have been hopeful for the most entertaining outcome of Charlie’s business in helping sinners redeem themselves possible in an almost addictive manner [54]. Well, at least not addictive in a bad way as I still believe the property and its gradually ongoing sister series can be still great coping mechanisms for people like me [87] [88], notably at the time Helluva Boss lets all hell break loose in Las Vegas in February 2023 [47]. Right now, it is time to keep hopes for Hazbin Hotel high once again before my boyfriend and I will let it go with the musical theatre adaption of Frozen in London [10] [65] [66]. 

Not only was the tenth anniversary of A24 marked almost three weeks ago but it was also the second anniversary of the company offering to give Vivienne Medrano’s creation some further credibility [55]. Aside from what else awaits in the Pride Ring of Hell, wait until Striker from the fifth episode of Helluva Boss meets my impsona in the Wrath Ring [57] [60] [76]! Speaking of the rings, are there any doctors for each of them [80] [81] [82] [83] [84] [85]? [55]

The redesign of the hotel that was revealed during the Christmas break sure is zany, from Alastor’s radio tower at the top to a merry-go-round on the left side [24] [25]. Speaking of redesigns, let us discuss the first change that will occur in the television series. [23]

Throughout 2022, brand new designs for the main characters have been revealed on social media [34]. Not only has Charlie’s surname been changed to “Morningstar” as a biblical reference to her father’s name but her pupils and trousers have been changed to red [15] [33] [34] [87] [88]. The edges of the lapel on Alastor’s tuxedo jacket have been changed to white [16]. Angel Dust’s design has been given a few alterations, including fewer stripes on his jacket and fewer spots on his head [17]. Vaggie’s dress has been replaced with a black skirt and a red shirt [18]. Niffty looks adorable in a new dress next to a new feline-like character [20]. There are now a pair of goggles attached to Sir Pentious’ living hat and one of his outfit’s eyes is now on his bowtie instead of his chest [21]. The stripes at the ends of Husk’s eyebrows are now much bolder [19]. Since the rights to air the Hazbin Hotel television series were given to A24 [1] [3], it makes sense for the characters to receive new designs after the success of the pilot [56]. Moreover, I was expecting some changes in terms of character design. But as always, what is more important than the updates of a character’s design is their character progression. 

I guess Charlie’s pupils have been changed to red to look more unique, despite how off-putting that was to me at first [33]. It will not be long until we will see Cherri Bomb’s new design. [15]

Could the first episode of the television series feature some backstory of Alastor and Angel Dust as humans on Earth before they died [29] [31], similar to how there was some backstory on how Stolas and Blitzo first met in the second season premiere of Helluva Boss [59]? [17]

Besides the main characters in their new designs, let us not forget about the supporting characters and the antagonists. As previously mentioned, there appears to be a new cat-like character next to Niffty’s updated design who might as well be a pet, just like Fat Nuggets [20] [54]. Razzle and Dazzle are Charlie’s bodyguards who appeared in the pilot and apparently like doughnuts [38]. Homer Simpson would not blame them, despite how one doughnut would cost his soul [75]. Mimzy may apparently be a diva who was driven into the need for fame, but I believe there can be something underneath her layers of materialistic showbiz if she ever seeks redemption at the hotel [37]. Valentino may be one of my least favourite characters [3] [44] [56] [87] [88], but I am still grateful for the offer to work at his studio I have received a few months ago [6]. Additionally, the official voice for Big V could be in a Spanish accent [44]. What about Roo? Well, there is yet to be some convincing portrayal of her in a new episode or two [41]. Lastly, it is highly likely that Baxter still will be an introverted scientist who died in the 1910s [32]. I guess the other characters can also be partially redesigned alongside their long-awaited portrayals in the show outside of YouTube [13] [56].

I suppose Razzle and Dazzle could provide some conversational humour if they get the capability of speech in the television series [38] [56], quite similar to the mannerisms of the gargoyles from The Hunchback of Notre Dame [79]. [39]

I want Valentino to get his just desserts at some point in the television series [44], yet I cannot help but see his potential in boosting his cred as a pimp with something rather special, which will be explained later. [56]

Back in 2012, the intellectual property began as a webcomic series named “ZooPhobia” [45] [91]. The premise of the series is about a twenty-five-year-old woman named Cameron who gets a job as a guidance counsellor but also has a fear of animals. The series is sorted into books, starting with Book 1. There was also an early version of Alastor that was scrapped and a character named “Lolly Gag” who was the ruler of the ZooPhobia version of the Lust Ring of Hell [89] [90]. Within a response to a question on Tumblr, Angel Dust seemed to have a love interest named “Tyco” [71]. There was supposed to be an audio-visual adaption of the comics, but it was supposedly cancelled in favour of producing Hazbin Hotel [62]. A reboot of the series was announced in 2017 [91], which led to the animated short titled “Bad Luck Jack” three years later [61], along with hopes for more animated shorts based on ZooPhobia in the future. For good old time’s sake, there ought to be plenty of Easter eggs and updated adaptions of Medrano’s ZooPhobia days throughout the run of Hazbin Hotel, including plenty of references to “Bad Luck Jack” and possibly a new love interest for Angel Dust based on Tyco …unless Husk can already fit the bill [61] [71] [91]. 

Alastor was created by Medrano during her high school years [45]. Strangely enough, he was supposed to have a crush on another character named “KayCee” in ZooPhobia before it was decided that he would be an asexual and aromantic deviant in Hazbin Hotel [28]. [89]

Surely, Lolly Gag can return in an updated design as a brand new character in a new episode of Helluva Boss? She can perhaps be another co-worker of Asmodeus [58]. [90]

I am up for a reboot of the characters’ official Instagram…or Sinstagram posts that are heavily based on the new forthcoming canon [58] [87] [88]. For the sake of the promotional system’s professionalism, each post ought to not consist of major spoilers [3]. Surely, there can be new fitting usernames for most of the characters to further increase the faithfulness to the new canon. And of course, there will still be no account for Alastor, considering he died in the Jazz Age [28] [46]. Since most of the accounts for the main Helluva Boss characters are still around, especially Stolas and Blitzo’s [3] [9], why not suddenly make one for Andrealphus soon [30]? Reflecting on how I suggest that a few other episodes of the second season of Helluva Boss can loosely adapt some of the old Voxtagram stories [87] [88], some of the old Voxtagram stories from the Hazbin Hotel accounts might as well be loosely adapted in the television series with updated elements [3]. If there ought to be a new canon for the Instagram stories for promotional purposes [46], the same mistakes that were made during the original canon should not be made again [3]. Besides, I have always been fond of the idea of the characters having official Instagram accounts and occasionally interacting with fans.

Isn’t Lilith Morningstar gorgeous [69]? I suppose the second season of Hazbin Hotel can feature new characters who use foldable smartphones, similar to the Galaxy Z Flip from Samsung [12]? [70]

I am glad my owl daddy can still enjoy posting on Sinstagram to this day [9]. Despite this, let us not forget about what happened with his daughter’s account if we ought to reboot the Sinstagram stories for the Hazbin Hotel characters once the television series airs [3]. [9]

Any more ideas on what new songs would sound like? Perhaps there can be an antiheroic equivalent of “Inside Every Demon Is A Rainbow” sung by Helsa Von Eldritch, Charlie’s rival and the sister of her ex-boyfriend [35] [42] [56]. Despite a glitchy mishap that left Silva Hound no choice but to re-upload an official lyric video with the glitch fixed back in January [11] [72] [74], the lyrics of Royal Flush, a song produced by him and sang by Mick Lauer and Jonathan Young described Husk’s character to a T [73]. How will one rehabilitate the Husk of a man in perhaps another song about him in possibly a different music genre [13] [56]? How about giving Lucifer Morningstar his own song, much like The Devil’s musical number in The Cuphead Show [63]? Reflecting on the possibility of Valentino speaking in a Spanish accent [44], a sensual Latin jazz ballad would spice up his cred as a pimp, even though nothing will ever justify the way he abuses Angel Dust and possibly his other employees [54] [87] [88]. There are quite a lot of possibilities for what kind of original songs the characters of Hazbin Hotel can sing throughout the run of the television series, even though Vaggie has preached that life is not a musical [56].

Supposedly, there could be a flashback scene of Charlie dating Seviathan von Eldritch before she dated Vaggie, leading to a little musical number [42]. Each musical number ought to provide either some interesting exploration or some compelling character development [54] [58] [59] [60]. [42]

Surely, Angel Dust will still be addicted to the sorrow when the buzz ends by tomorrow [54], but I do not doubt that there could be another song dedicated to his gradual redemption. There can always be great new fanmade songs in the meantime [67] [68] [77] [86]. [56]

Who knows which streaming service will Hazbin Hotel air on once the hotel is in business, yet it would most likely be available on Netflix, just like The Cuphead Show [3] [63]? And who knows how severe the consequences will be for wearing socks with sandals [5]? During the wait, I think there ought to be an official Mandarin dub of “That’s Entertainment” and a full official Latin American Spanish dub of the Helluva Boss pilot since Mandarin Chinese and Spanish are two of the most spoken languages in the world besides English and Hindi [14] [49] [52]. Besides, Husk can speak Mandarin Chinese [36]. Moreover, the dubs can appeal to those who speak different dialects of Mandarin and Spanish [7] [52] [53] [64]. As for the forthcoming television series, I shall also remain hopeful that reasonable criticism will be taken to make it even better than both the production and the outcome of the pilot [56]. As I continue to get a “HELL YEAH!!!” from other hazbeans [5] [6] [67], I shall continue to wait for the official French dub of “Murder Family” [26] [27], the first episode of the first season of Helluva Boss [57], along with the next episode of the second season [59]. I also hope my fellow hazbeans are still happy to be sinners in the Vivziepop circles of Hell. Stay sinful!

Alternatively, there can be a South Korean dub of the pilot as it seems far less likely that Korean viewers will be affected by how inconsiderate it would be to depict only four fingers on each hand in Japan, in spite of Korea’s independence from Japan back in 1945 [8] [50]. I would much rather see an official Korean dub of “That’s Entertainment” instead of a cartoon associated with a hateful propaganda [78]. [16]

The pilot of Hazbin Hotel is still entertainment [13] [56]. I am sure that there will be plenty of the four-armed frenemy’s fluffiness for every Hazbean [51]. We shall wait to see what the events after the pilot will tempt us into sin with [1]. Stay tuned [56]! [22] [34]
