Foster’s Funtime For Imaginary Friends To Be Imagined Before The Return of The Powerpuff Girls

Remember when a supposed reboot of Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends was announced alongside the confirmation of a second reboot of The Powerpuff Girls by no other than Craig McCracken, the creator of those beloved cartoons three years ago [99] [100]? Well, after being firstly revealed at Annecy Festival 2023 [90] [91], it was revealed that the imminent incarnation of Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends, formerly named “Foster’s Imaginary Nursery”, will consist of some notable differences as seen in a preview and more key art last year [2]. More information about the show, such as a few plot summaries without major spoilers, was revealed at the Annecy Festival a year later [13] [38]. The most surprising confirmation to me would be how it will be aimed at a younger audience, making it the opposite of Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake being directly aimed at young adults [89]. At first, Foster’s Funtime For Imaginary Friends sounded like it would be a spin-off instead of a reboot [13], so that the charm of the original series would not risk being tainted [7] [63] [66] [105] [106]. But alas, as many of us have expected, it will likely serve as a new continuity [38], as concerning as it may be, as plenty of us would prefer a revival of the original [106] [107]. Nevertheless, let us keep our hopes up for a passable reimagining, as well as another reboot that can fix what was broken in the first one [99] [100].

I hope Buttercup…or Mange took a bath before I published this article [78]. [86]

I seriously doubt that Hasbro “stole” ideas from the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fandom during the development of the spin-off known as Equestria Girls”, according to some skeptical nonsense [3] [61], but I cannot deny the potential of a reimagining of Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends [2] [13] [38]. So, let us start with that before expanding on our hopes for the next incarnation of The Powerpuff Girls that should not make the same mistakes the first reboot made [101] [102].

The animation for the upcoming re-imagining will be CGI with some 2D vibes [2] [13] [38], which appears to be inspired by the ambitious experiment with different styles in The Amazing World of Gumball and The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball [8] [9] [59]. At first, I was fairly neutral towards this aspect as there have been conversions to CGI and redesigns that were detested. Nonetheless, I believe the cute new style can simply be considered the Gumballstyle equivalent of the animation in the original series, considering that it is not completely off-putting as I look at an official sample about a year later. Should we give the Blooster some medication to help him revert to the art style of the original series…or just let the new style collide with the writing’s potential [70]? Aside from the spin-off being in mostly 3D instead of 2D, I believe that Bloo will be beyond the days of Pierre Szechuan but still be mischievous within a “laughs over lessons” approach as an episode of the reimagining titled “Broccoli Bloo” will be about Bloo convincing his fellow imaginary friends that broccoli is bad, according to what was seen in an animatic that was seen earlier this year [32] [38].

The new style for Foster’s Funtime For Imaginary Friends is nowhere near as divisive as the designs of The Powerpuff Girls in the Dance Pantsed special that aired and raised some eyebrows back in 2014 [88] [101] [102]. As previously mentioned, more hopes on a new incarnation of Townsville’s pint-sized protectors will be explained later. [88]

Alas, who can forget the vibrant aesthetics of the original incarnation of the home for imaginary friends [7] [51] [63], along with the priceless special guest appearance of Mandy from The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy [63][67]? [67]

 

Before McCracken deactivated his Twitter/X account [39], I recall a tweet of his expressing how being a father has inspired him to aim Foster’s Funtime For Imaginary Friends at a younger audience [96]. However, it can be argued that Bloo should NOT be the protagonist of a certain aimed at younger children due to how much of a bad influence he has been, especially with all the loony lawbreaking he committed in the original series [51] [110]. Yes, I dared to make that reference [65]! But still, his immaturity seems to have been toned down to just telling some other friends that broccoli is bad without a sickly load of sweetness and ending up with a tummy ache (and hopefully not provoking Gordon Ramsay [31]) [38]. Moreover, the lack of educational value must be to ensure that the reimagining will not seem too preachy in some way. At least Berry will not be around to be his yandere in the reboot/spin-off clearly aimed at preschoolers [108], right? Aiming Foster’s Funtime For Imaginary Friends, formerly known as “Foster’s Imaginary Nursery” at a younger audience is as harmless as Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic becoming a princess and Equestria Girls, contrary to some overreactions [2] [13] [38] [61], so it would be no surprised if Bloo’s antics will not be as outrageously dastardly as they were in the original series for the sake of his overall likeability [40] [52]. Besides, Keith Ferguson is reprising the role [53]!

In theory, Foster’s Funtime For Imaginary Friends may revert Bloo’s personality back to how it was in the first season of the original series and let a positive quality of his pop up from his mischievous nature when it is needed [51]. [7]

Aside from the blue Western tsundere of the 2000s [40] [51], Mac, Cheese and Madame Foster from the original series will return in the upcoming reimagining [13] [38]. Out of the twenty episodes of the whole season, I believe that at least one ought to be focused on Mac and Bloo’s friendship from the original series, thus explaining how Mac imagined Bloo when he was only three years old [99] [100]. I believe and deeply hope that Cheese will still be the weird but funny and iconic dude who likes chocolate milk and cereal from the original series [13] [23] [38]. And yes, I suspect that Madame Foster will not necessarily play the virtuous guardian role, compared to Granny in Baby Looney Tunes [14] [15] [16], but still be the fun-loving elder we humbly admire in the original series. But you know who I think can be a mentor to the new pack of younger friends in at least one episode of Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends? Wilt or Frankie! There may have some focus on new and younger characters in the imminent reimagining, which is understandable [13] [38], but hopefully, the faithfulness to the original can be increased with the return of Wilt, Eduardo, Coco, Frankie, Goo and even a second chance for characters who only appears in one episode like Eurotrish who can be good friends with Nancy if the two were to return together [106] [107].

Perhaps one of the new imaginary friends in Foster’s Funtime For Imaginary Friends can be one of Goo’s. She was a brilliant character in the original series and the reimagining can provide a deep connection between her and the chosen friend [4] [66]. [66]

And thankfully, Duchess will not be in a reimagining aimed at preschoolers to make a ruckus [36]. And no, Terrance, Singapore is NOT in Wisconsin, you one-dimensional, evil jerk making your little brother’s life Heck for apparently no reason [10] [33] [60]. [36]

Let us discuss the designs of the new friends. As you can tell, the pack looks varied, especially the one who looks like a child’s drawing, thus giving off the previously mentioned The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball aesthetic [2] [8] [9] [13] [38]. This includes the friend that resembles Pinkie Pie from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic [58], but with a birthday cake for a body, an ice cream cone for a unicorn horn and gumdrops for hooves and another friend who resembles a star dressed up as a superhero [2] [13] [38]. And do not forget about the other two friends, one that resembles a robot with the colour palette of Astro Bot and the other that strangely reminds me of Lily Pad, the antagonist of the upcoming Toy Story 5 [56] [74]. There is not much about the new and much younger friends that are seen following Bloo in the official title reveal, but about as much as I suspect that Emberlynn Pinkle from the third minisode of Helluva Shorts might eventually go steady with the “Better Than Blitzo” guy from “Apology Tour”, the ninth episode of the second season of Helluva Boss [54] [55], I suspect that they can leave some impact on the reimaging in their own way, considering how experienced McCracken is and how reliable the same creator who created the original series creating the recreation can be [52].

Valentino from Hazbin Hotel does not deserve to have his own spin-off alongside the other two Vees to plenty of us due to his abusive nature towards Angel Dust and there is some skepticism towards the idea of a continuation ofSquid Game in the USA [30] [34] [42] [43] [97] [98], but I can see a new incarnation of Bloo being less like the kid-friendly equivalent of Eric Cartman from South Park, according to only a fraction of the fandom side from the new pack of friend sparking some curiosity [40] [51] [110]. [2] [13] [38]

Ah, yes. The star-like friend must be a fleshed-out incarnation of the one who appeared in “Emancipation Complication”, the tenth episode of the fourth season of the original series [37] [42]. Perhaps there can be an episode of the reimagining about all the new friends making their own story, much like in a certain episode of Baby Looney Tunes and one of the Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends Shorts known as “Drawing Bored” [17] [28]? Maybe in a second season? [42]

Is there any more to predict and hope for regarding the second reboot of The Powerpuff Girls aside from what we have discussed alongside the franchise’s history three years ago [101] [102]? Well, since Blossom can speak Cantonese (and possibly Mandarin) and Bubbles can speak Spanish, Squirrel and a little bit of Japanese (that could have been more accurate [86]) in the original series [62] [101] [102], why not let Buttercup speak a second language, such as German, Afrikaans or a South Korean dialect of Korean in the next reboot [69] [109]? Reflecting on Alesha Dixon being one of the voices of Bliss in the controversial reboot that ran from 2016 to 2019 to appeal to viewers in the United Kingdom [11] [12] [101] [102], I would be quite thrilled to see the trio’s British counterparts, whether or not they will be from an alternate universe like Stella and Barbie Wire from Helluva Girl Boss, a fanmade female-focused AU created by an artist known as “LizaerdyDragon” that clearly differs from Helluva Boss [44] [45] [46] [47] [48] [49] [50]. Lastly, as odd as this sounds, I think it would be cool to aim McCracken’s reboot of The Powerpuff Girls at teenagers and young adults in contrast to Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends being aimed at preschoolers [2] [13] [38], thus bringing back the intense violence and a few sly jokes we adults would get but not being too extreme with the edginess [101] [102]. That’s Vivenne Medrano’s job [54]. Hopefully, no fools will mess with the natural order…again [77].

Even though the Powerpuff Girls are kindergartners, I am up for their second reimaging being aimed at an older demographic that might as well be all the 2000s kids, which would be somehow like the new spin-off of Chuck E. Cheese’s known as “Chuck’s Arcade” that is simply an arcade but aimed at an older demographic with imagery of Chuck’s classic era [92]. It worked for the revival of Samurai Jack that aired on Adult Swim [1], didn’t it? But please. Do not call it “Whoopass Stew!” [101] [102]. [79]

And yes, the theme song for the second Japanese opening for Powerpuff Girls Z is awesome too [21] [103] [104]. I am still up for the second reboot of The Powerpuff Girls consisting of various references to the magical girl anime based on the original series, despite McCracken’s refusal to let it air in North America at the time [85] [101] [102]. [85].

Aside from the return of Ms. Bellum and the narrator [101] [102], how can the friends and foes of the girls be fleshed out even further without the negative reception of the first reboot overshadowing them? I am up for Him, the flamboyant interpretation of The Devil returning in association with a much darker nature aimed at an older audience…as a part-time barber who can give Ms. Bellum a haircut [27]. I think the Mayor’s wife can make a full appearance within a bigger speaking role to finally give her a little depth, especially in terms of their marriage [87]. I guess there can be an episode of Princess Morbucks being taught to be a better person, even if it might only be for being a true powerpuff girl after so long [80]. And like I stated before, the older and underrated sister from the first reboot, Bliss can be given a second chance within a retelling of her origin story and character growth, along with her time at either Townsville Middle School or Townsville High School [99] [100]. It is not just the trio of little superheroines who need to be revamped to let the terror of the first reboot ooze away, so some further exploration that has never been made before can be made for a second reboot [101] [102].

The cancellation of “Powerpuff”, the live-action reboot that was going to be aimed a more mature audience but never made it through an entire development sounded like a blessing [83] [84], but surely, an animated reboot aimed at an older audience can excel if done right, even if a few ideas from the cancellation can be gathered to make up for some missed opportunities, such as Ms. Bellum being in a relationship with the Professor at some point [83]. And yes, there ought to NOT be a future of the girls as young adults being into adult situations that seem out of place…unless they can be handled about as greatly as many moments regarding mature subject matters in The Simpsons and Bojack Horseman [35] [71] [72] [75] [84] [94] [95]. [84]

An anime or modern manga starring Crash Bandicoot may not be happening anytime soon [103] [104], but imagination is still running wild outside of Japan as Foster’s Funtime For Imaginary Friends is indeed highly promising [2] [13] [38]. Aside from how McCracken made the wise decision to quit Twitter/X almost a year ago [39], there is something deeply heartwarming about his fatherhood inspiring him to produce a reboot/spin-off aimed at a younger audience while keeping another one in mind [96]. I could perhaps write a bedtime story for preschoolers if I were to become a mother whilst ensuring myself and others that modern women can do anything they put their minds to, no matter what some people would say [18] [19] [20]. Surely, Foster’s Funtime For Imaginary Friends will not make the same mistakes the original series made with certain episodes [99] [100] [101] [102], despite the probability of not quite having the same charm and edge [2] [13] [38], much like how the second reboot of The Powerpuff Girls will not repeat the errors of both the first reboot AND the original series, yet it would be best to let McCracken focus more on Foster’s Funtime For Imaginary Friends if he wishes to in the meantime [52]. Until then, keep expressing your ambitions [25] [56] [68] [73], whether you regret going to college/university or not [5] [20] [22] [24] [64] [76]. And Cheese, you don’t live here! Go home [23]!

Lastly, aside from hopes for a second chance at rebooting The Powerpuff Girls the right way [101] [102], there is also hope that another live-action Bratz movie that is currently in the works will be an improvement from the brutally panned adaptation from 2007 [6], even with Kim Kardashian playing the role of an antagonist [29] [93]. Aside from hoping for the best outcomes of new instalments of franchises possible or a chance to head back to the simpler times [26], let us be kind and supportive to one another (and trolling bigots [107]) as always. [82]
