Another Hell Of An Episode Of Helluva Boss

Disclaimer:

This is a review and analysis of an episode of an animated series aimed at mature audiences that consists of:

  •        Strong profanity
  •        Strong cartoon violence
  •        Strong sexual references
  •        Hellish and mildly frightening imagery
  •        Flashing lights

There will also be some reflections of a previous episode that contains highly similar content, including suicide. Reader discretion is once again strongly advised.

Here we go again, fellow sinners! A new episode of Helluva Boss has been uploaded onto YouTube after the first anniversary of the pilot’s release date and success [12] [25] [36]. Firstly, it was announced near the end of the two promotional videos for selling a lot of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss merchandise on Black Friday and a few days after [29] [30]. I can see that an animated short based on Medrano’s old webcomic series titled “Bad Luck Jack” may not have been as successful as the pilots of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss [7] [68]. Nonetheless, it provided exceptional musical numbers, vibrant art style, fascinating character designs and a somewhat relatable main character [39], so we can still admire the artistic talents and such of Vivienne Medrano and her crew at SpindleHorse Toons, whether they are related to Hazbin Hotel or not. After being dragged into the Vivziepop circle of Hell once again, I shall courageously review the second episode of the first season that has been titled “Loo Loo Land” and also reflect on a few aspects of the previous episode while we are also still looking forward to Hazbin Hotel finally airing on television after the success of its pilot [1] [16] [63] [64].

Let us go for another ride to Hell on spindle horses! [23]

Reflecting on how Mrs. Mayberry shot herself due to heartbreak and extreme guilt before ending up in Hell as Blitzo’s client in the first episode [37] [59] [60], I remember how I made it clear that I believe that it would be best if none of the deaths of Hell’s residents will be suicide in my review of the pilot of Hazbin Hotel [63] [64]. I find believing that committing suicide will take you to Hell, even if you have not harmed anyone else disrespectful and absolutely deplorable [10] [21], which means that the moment of the protagonist shooting himself in the head after the player chooses to quit the gameplay in Isle Of The Dead has not aged well [52]. On a lighter note, no damned soul or demon in the afterlife called her a coward for taking her own life, which is why I believe that her fate was not too disrespectful [13] [61] [62]. Furthermore, it was the fact that she killed her adulterous husband first that made her end up in Hell, but at least revenge against Martha, along with justice was eventually served as her true colours were revealed after she received deceitful publicity that made her seem so sweet and innocent [37].

I do not condone viciously attacking anyone for stating that committing suicide is a “coward’s way out” or that it is a sin that will land someone in Hell [10] [13] [61] [62], but I do wish for people to calmly but firmly remind them to at least be respectful to innocent people who lost their fights against mental illness. Furthermore, I am happy to hear that there are plenty of Christians who respectfully do not believe in suicide being an unforgivable sin [21]. [37]

Let us take a look at some further development of the Immediate Murder Professionals in "Loo Loo Land", starring with the hell of a boss who is seen yelling enthusiastically into a megaphone with a paper crown on his head in a preview on Twitter [25]. I find how he was playing with toys of Moxxie and Millie he made cheaply before receiving yet another call from the promiscuous owl rather…assuming [36]. Weirdly enough, it is quite interesting how he used to work as a clown in Loo Loo Land during a flashback [14]. In the present, he is seen wearing his bodyguard attire whilst on duty, which is another interesting take on his character, especially when it comes to how far he will go just to get paid. Could he eventually see Stolas in a different light after being promised to be paid with money for guarding him and his daughter in Loo Loo Land? At the moment, probably not as he kept warning him to not get any funny ideas during his assignment. As the foul-mouthed demon who takes his occupation as a mercenary quite seriously despite his questionable actions [34] [35] [36], what would be posting on Instagram next [2] [14]?

I do not doubt that Blitzo hated his old job [14], almost as much as he hated a f**king clown. [36]

As for the happily and hellishly married couple, they also look pretty cool in their bodyguard outfits, especially with sunglasses [36]. Millie’s excitement and enthusiasm when it comes to gleefully experiencing a rehash of her childhood are utterly adorable and remind me of how ecstatic I felt when I went to the Gadget Show in Birmingham back in 2013 [11] [54]. Too bad Moxxie got terrified of Loo Loo Land’s mascot and feels rather unnerved throughout the assignment, but at least he shows signs of determination in a scene that reminds me of that scene in Despicable Me where Gru tries to win a unicorn plushie for Agnes [8] [36]. Furthermore, if Moxxie ever has a child with Millie, I am sure that he would not want to load a lot of syringes into his or her pram. I believe that Angel Dust can help him overcome a panic attack as a way to enhance his likability and increase his chance of being redeemed in order to enter Heaven if there ought to be an official crossover between Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss [3]. I sure hope the two imps stay cute together and perhaps have a wedding anniversary in another episode in the future.

A bit of missed opportunity for a Men In Black parody [53] [67], but oh well. [36]

Moxxie and Millie’s relationship still seems to be strong as Moxxie attempts to impress Millie by winning to win a plushie she wants. How precious is that? [36]

We see Stolas of the Ars Goetia again, but this time with another owl demon named Octavia, his seventeen-year-old daughter who is not the only princess in Hell [18] [36]. Watching the beginning of “Loo Loo Land”, I felt my heart warm up as I saw him comfort her when she was a child. A preview of the two reacting differently shown in a small crowd in the present on Twitter cracked me up at first [22], but my reaction soon soured when she had enough [36]. Unfortunately, he seems to not feel any remorse for sleeping with an imp behind his spouse’s back at first in the present day, which might affect his likeability to some viewers. The red-eyed owl may be flirtatious with an alluring voice outside of his responsibilities of being a father, but please do not tell him I said that if you ever get killed and sent to Hell by Moxxie or Millie…or I might be the next target for a moment of censor bleeps the next time I answer my phone [34] [35] [37]. Nonetheless, I am more than happy to witness his heart-warming and genuine development when it came to being a good father, thus providing some widely expanded likeability, despite his adultery or possibly rule breaking in an open marriage [36].

Stolas’ new voice is irresistibly calming and he sings beautifully. I suppose he can try and serenade Blitzo in the next episode or two after making up for how his daughter ended up in tears at Loo Loo Land… [36]

…but HOLY SH**!!! I never thought he would be able to turn a fiend into stone with a death stare – Medusa style [45]! Eat your heart out, Luigi [27] [40]! [36]

The promiscuous owl’s offspring has finally received some development. As a child, Octavia is absolutely adorable! Too bad her teenaged counterpart does not like how Loo-Loo Land is apparently a rip-off of Lu Lu World [18]. As an aspiring reviewer, I honestly do not blame her for how she is not fond of rip-offs. Surely how cynical she became after hitting puberty seems quite stereotypical when it came to portraying a teenaged character, but at least there is a legitimate reason for her to be that way, compared how Pink Dawn from the reboot of Danger Mouse supposedly became a sassy teenager in one episode for no reason [36] [49]. Although I do not condone what made Stolas’ wife furiously scold him and how he was unaware of how Fizzarolli was his daughter’s childhood fear, I can still see how he is still trying to be a caring father as her tears cause him to feel some remorse about taking her to Loo Loo Land against her will. Octavia’s overall portrayal in “Loo Loo Land” goes a little beyond the “moody teenager” trope, leading to her being quite sympathetic just before the end of the resolution shows her being happy about a promise from a childhood remaining unbroken.

If it was not for the valid reasons for Octavia to be grumpy, she would not be quite as likeable and her development would not be as effective. I know that the modern version of Danger Mouse and Helluva Boss are aimed at different audiences [37] [49], but my point still stands. [36]

Who the hell is the clown we saw in a promotional image for the new episode on Twitter [23]?! His name is loosely based on a jester named "Fizzarolli" and his overall character design sure is gaudy. Previously, he was only in a picture in “Murder Family” [15]. As seen in another preview on Twitter [24], some point of his show that is portrayed as a parody of a band at Chuck E. Cheese’s takes a drastic turn [58]. It turns out to be Octavia’s childhood fear [36]. The band of animatronics behind him on the stage bring out those Five Nights At Freddy’s vibes [50], especially Fizzarolli’s robotic counterpart, Robo Fizz. I quite like how the deranged clown showed a little self-awareness when it came to the allegations of Loo Loo Land being a rip-off of Lu Lu World, along with how he turns out to be a menacing antagonist [36]. Surely it could be implied that Martha only had sex with other men besides Ralphie to lure more victims into being skinned or eaten in the previous episode [37], but as for the prime target in the second episode, he just strives in being part of a shameless knock-off and does not give a darn if Blitzo despises him too [36].

The horrific vibes of Robo Fizz’s shows lead to a theory that the nightmare Octavia had when she was a child was about him. Even how sparks sometimes erupt from his body due to an imperfect condition is unsettling. It is also rather sneaky how he even advertises sexual services for older demons in a theme park that is mostly aimed at young demons [15]. [36]

What about any new minor characters? Stella, Stolas’ wife seemingly has every right to be furious at him for his affair after a flashback of Octavia’s childhood [36], thus taking the title “Angry Birds Stella” to a whole new level and reminding me of how I definitely have every right to be angry at deplorable prejudice against autistic people [26] [48]. Considering how he has attempted to seduce Blitzo on the phone twice [34] [37], he probably fell out of love with her at some point after Octavia’s birth, but perhaps cannot bear to divorce her yet for the sake of his offspring [36]. Well, Helluva Boss is set in Hell. What do we expect? Adultery is a sin, according to the Christian Bible [57]. The guy at the stall is quite a sleazy son of a gun, mocking Moxxie’s failing to knock down a target and only letting Millie “win” before being quite flirtatious with her [36]. His attitude really does remind me of the red-haired theme park employee from Despicable Me [8]. Could Loo Loo, Loo Loo Land’s mascot really be a pervert in disguise? By his reaction to Moxxie’s accusation, I guess so. In their own ways, I can see how the minor characters of the episode add to the unsettling nature beyond Imp City.

Cheating on a spouse or going against the rules in an open marriage, eh Stolas? I guess you will have nightmares after being seduced by Catherine soon [9], but we are still proud of you for not breaking a promise you made to your daughter. As for you, Stella, you remind me of how angry I have been almost all year. [36]

Oi! Millie is Moxxie’s sweetheart! Go find your own or go hide in a box of shame [8]! [36]

Shall we analyse the visuals again? Why the hell not? You can say that I was quite too mesmerised by the design of Stolas’ bathroom to wonder how the hell did constellations appear somewhere in Hell during the events of “Murder Family” [37] [59] [60]. I guess they were “borrowed” from Heaven or something. Once again in a new episode, the quality of each scene consists of convincing colour palettes and a good amount of detail, especially Loo Loo Land [36]. I was enchanted by the celestial and galactic scenery where Stolas comforts Octavia with a lullaby, especially a sky full of stars in outer space, thus being reminded to try to act similarly if I ever become a mother of a child. I adore the design of the kitchen owned by him and his family, especially a tint of pink beaming through the tall windows and the sophisticatedly designed wallpaper. The design of the I.M.P. van looks radical with a graffiti-styled logo and the various shades of green during Robo Fizz’s performance give a creepy vibe. The green flames that occur during the episode’s climax are animated quite realistically, looking rather intimidating. Remaining the same art quality throughout the rest of the first season would definitely be essential [34] [35] [36] [37].

The design of the funhouse Octavia hides in is also intimidating, despite the mesmerising colour palette. Just look at all of those eyes and the decapitated hands! [36]

I am especially fond of the design of the ride Octavia sheds tears on. Kudos to the animators and visual designers! [36]

Shall we also analyse some examples of the humour and wittiness, apart from the profanity and sexual references [36]? Hell yes! I think Stolas suddenly got captured by a bunch of fiends and called for Blitzo’s help in his usual tone for seduction summed up the prime conflict of the Super Mario Bros. games in a nutshell [41] [42]. His running gag reserved for Blitzo may be only just one censor bleep [59] [60], but at least it has not gone stale. His daughter’s grumpiness and cynical remarks mostly sum me up in 2020 [36]. Speaking of grumpiness, it was priceless to hear Loona scream, “Shut the f**k up!” after Blitzo accepts the assignment and yells into a megaphone. I also found the way Moxxie thought Octavia was literally feeling ill and offered her a few forms of medication after she only said a figure of speech amusing. The self-awareness of Loo Loo Land being quite shady when it comes to very little originality and the risk of being sued for a guest being seriously injured on a ride could be a form of satire. With witty dialogue, I can still even smell the charm of the series.

Oops! They ticked off Loona! [36]

I will admit that this moment would have to be one my least favourite jokes in the whole episode, but I suppose some of my fellow sinners will be more amused at it. [36]

Previously, Mrs. Mayberry’s song before the devolution of her morality was simply titled “Teacher’s Song” [20] [37]. What about the new song that is featured in the second episode of the first season? Oh, wait! This time, we have THREE songs in one episode [36]! Firstly, Stolas’ lullaby for his daughter reminds me of the song “Here Comes A Thought” from one episode of Steven Universe [4]. His singing sounded heavenly as he attempted to comfort a younger Octavia and help her go back to sleep. The song “My World Is Turning Down Around Me” may have only been heard for under ten seconds, but it metaphorically sums up how a teenaged Octavia felt when he woke up to her mother’s outrage after she found out about Stolas’ adultery. What about “Loo Loo Land”, the third song performed by the crazy robotic jester? Oh my Lucifer! I like how he made a reference to the beginning of Charlie’s original musical number named “Every Demon Is A Rainbow” in the pilot of Hazbin Hotel [31]. All three songs are quite memorable in their own ways. Loo Loo Land hats off to the writers and composers of the three songs in “Loo Loo Land”.

If I ever have a son or daughter, I could sing this song to comfort him or her, just as long as I do not end up demolishing a solar system. [36]

A dream to tell [31]? More like a nightmare to tell. [36]

Lastly, let us examine the other aspects of the audio throughout the second episode of the first season [36]. The voice acting for Fizzarolli’s robotic counterpart has been distorted to sound like a menacing robot, enriching his show’s Five Nights At Freddy’s vibes [50]. There are also samples of background music reused from the previous episode, including the theme music that was previously heard when Stolas calls Blitzo and speaks to him seductively in his bathroom [36] [37]. I also heard the theme music for Blitzo’s office play during his questionable roleplay [36], which was previously used when Mrs. Mayberry explains her motivations for hiring him and his team in “Murder Family” [37]. I also like how there are even convincing sound effects within the actions of the characters for extra consistency in “Loo Loo Land”, including the slurping for when Blitzo has a drink on duty and the little noises Stolas’ pet monster plant makes in his kitchen [36]. While using the same original soundtrack for almost every episode would be a key to making the series more iconic and help maintain its familiarity, adding realistic and comedic sound effects for a character’s actions should also be present for enriching overall audio quality, despite the risk of it being too excessive.

Look how tall Stolas is compared to the imp he flirts with as a bunch of run-of-the-mill sounds of a theme park drone on! [36]

I also heard the theme tune for when the imps are on duty [37]. I guess I ought to have it in my head if I ever go paintballing. [36]

With another widely acclaimed episode of Helluva Boss on YouTube, I can see that Medrano has come a long way since The Son Of 666 [38] [59] [60]. My fellow Hazbeans and I can tell just how passionately developed the two cartoons set in the same animated circle of Hell are made. Even though this sounds highly unnecessary, there can be “remastered” re-releases of the pilots that consist of fixed animation errors, quite similar to how there are reuploaded versions of episodes of the Angry Video Game Nerd series that have higher quality and how specific edits in episodes of the first few seasons of Peppa Pig featured Peppa and some of her friends wearing bicycle helmets [43] [44] [46] [47] [51]. It worked for a fanmade music video starring Shadow the Hedgehog, right [55] [56]? As for the vulgarity and quirkness of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss that were unleashed from the fires of Hell in late 2019 [31] [34], let us stay tuned for more new episodes, language dubs and so on in the rest of this new decade [32] [33] [35]. Perhaps there could be some footage on an anime show within a show as we briefly saw Angel Dust as an anime character on a body pillow in the pilot of Hazbin Hotel [31] [32] [33].

Before the Hazbin Hotel series eventually airs on television in Japan after becoming a critical acclaim in the West [1] [16], it could be recommended to make careful edits within the animation of each episode that gives the characters an extra finger on each hand, especially for a parody of an anime starring Angel Dust to ensure that those who have been affected by the shock of losing a finger will not get offended [5] [6] [65] [66]. [33]

As for Helluva Boss, I cannot wait to watch the other six episodes within the first season [17]. Who knows what the second season will bring? Stay sinful, murder professionals! [36]
