Hopes For Shrek 5 – Hoping All Ogre Again

Disclaimer:
This is an article that features a spoiler from Puss In Boots: The Last Wish as a reliable source of a future instalment’s development being confirmed. Feel free to avoid reading it if you are still planning to avoid spoilers if you have not yet watched the film.

Over four years ago, we have discussed what we ought to expect if DreamWorks decides to reboot the Shrek franchise [67] [68]. However, such a concept has not been brought into action…yet [43], most likely due to the scorching heat of development hell at DreamWorks Animation LLC [62]. To make up for a similar phase during its production, the critical reception of Puss In Boots: The Last Wish has been outstanding with its praise regarding the remarkably upgraded animation and deep new character development for the smooth-talking gato [4] [8] [62]. Do not get me wrong. The idea of a fifth Shrek film still sounds unnecessary, considering the plot of Shrek Forever After seemed like a true send-off [9] [36], along with a certain disturbingly bizarre meme three years later [25]. However, a sudden sequel could lead to some new aspects of a fictional universe that have not been discovered before, which could be preferred over a reboot [63] [67] [68]. Besides, Shrek, Fiona and Donkey made an appearance in the new DreamWorks opening in notably updated animation [27]. As delighted as I was at Hatsune Miku’s collaboration with Kuromi near the Christmas break [16] [73], I am hopeful for the grand return of Shrek on the big screen leaving an inspirational impact after Puss in Boots’ last wish after such a chaotic year [6] [8] [9] [63].
Well, well, well. Shrek 5 has finally been confirmed [43] [63]. It is about time we establish an updated and hopefully more reliable equivalent of what we discussed in November 2018 [67] [68]. Trust me, I have been quite an analyser for over a lustrum [65] [66]. This is the part where you keep reading [34] [57]. For five minutes! Can you please read this article…FOR FIVE MINUTES [24] [35]?! Much obliged. [43]

Rumours about a fifth Shrek film being produced spread across social media from 2014 to 2018 [9] [43]. At the end of Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, which was previously referred to as “Puss In Boots 2: Nine Lives & 40 Thieves” during its production [41] [67] [68], Puss mentions some old friends of his [41] [62], leading to the development being true [63]. As previously mentioned, a direct sequel to the supposed finale of the main film series would be preferred over a reimagining of the first film [67] [68], especially by those who do not want something that is not broken to get fixed [63]. Who knows? The first teaser trailer for a fifth Shrek movie might just be released this May [43], most notably featuring Shrek, Fiona and Donkey in the visuals of Puss In Boots: The Last Wish [8] [27] [56] [61]. Additionally, there ought to be the presence of a new character from a fairytale or nursery rhyme that has not been spoofed in the franchise before, perhaps along with signs of a scrapped idea for any of the previous films being rewritten for updated expectations [63]. But you know what Geri, the toy repairman said as he made Woody look brand new in Toy Story 2 [49] [54]. You cannot rush art. Furthermore, we ought to wait for the development hell to finally be extinguished [62] [63].
Put a fedora on Shrek’s head because a fifth film needs its soul saved from development damnation [28]. Pray to him every night before bed [25]? Ummmmm…okay? [57]
What could certain aspects of the plot of Shrek 5 be like in terms of trying something new without somewhat alienating the fanbase? Maybe Shrek’s parents can make an appearance in a flashback in Shrek 5 in convincing and expanded interpretations as they made an appearance in the musical adaption [14] [44] [45] [46]. As selfish and heartless as Sid’s family is in Ice Age: Continental Drift [10] [22], we would suspect that Shrek’s mother and father would still be quite problematic aspects of his past as we reflect on their toxic attitudes regarding their own grandchildren in the comic series [14] [44] [45] [46]. Donkey might as well have flashbacks of his own within some new character progression too [11] [63]. Maybe the witch who cursed Fiona and was only mentioned in the first film could finally make an appearance and confront her if a certain fan theory ought to finally be debunked [12] [34], leading to some new character exploration for the former princess of Far Far Away [63]. And speaking of theories being either proven or disproven, perhaps one of the fifth film’s antagonists could be Prince Charming’s father regarding the prime conflict [13]. Aside from the plot of Shrek 5 providing some effectiveness, it ought to be elevated by the outstanding quality of the animation from Puss In Boots: The Last Wish [8] [56] [61].
Theoretically, Shrek’s parents being toxic in the comic book issue they appeared would be to blame for Shrek’s eventual desire to be feared again in Shrek Forever After [14] [36] [44] [45] [46] [58]. Furthermore, they would also be partly blamed for his antisocial nature in the first film [14] [34]. For the fifth film, they could appear in flashbacks as Shrek reflects on his personal evolution. [44] [45]
Unlike the downgraded visuals of The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild [7], the animation in Puss In Boots: The Last Wish is a remarkable step up [8] [56] [61]. As long as the budget for it is there, it ought to dazzle once again for a revival of the main Shrek series. [61]

What other new aspects could be established in Shrek 5 when it comes to expanding on the twisted world of fairytales and nursery rhymes once again? New supporting characters without any of their roles seeming tacked on? Perhaps there could be a genuinely good witch like Glinda from The Wizard Of Oz [53], but with a more notably witty personality, along with the bizarre interpretations of characters from Alice In Wonderland from the musical [1] [2] [40] [46] [48]. Again, there ought to not be any corny references to tropes and trends in real life, such as parodies of social media and the term “hashtag’ as those would decrease the imaginativeness of the Shrek universe to an extent [67] [68], even though Puss seems quite good at ASMR [61]. Lastly, why not let Shrek and Fiona recite the romantic dialogues of their counterparts from the children’s book by William Steig the first film was loosely based on for old times’ sake [30] [42] [52]? Perhaps that would occur during their anniversary. What is fresh and familiar for brogres to behold is ultimately in experienced hands at DreamWorks Animation LLC [43], yet there will be hope that the main Shrek franchise will not seem like such a desperate attempt at regaining relevancy, especially after the run of Swamp Talk from 2015 to 2016 [47].
Another potentially good idea for the story in Shrek 5 would be the return of Arthur Pendragon from Shrek The Third [37], which would allow him to gain some further character progression, along with more memorability and likeability on possibly a new quest with Shrek, Puss and Donkey [63]. Oh! And I am terribly sorry, but I think James Arnold Taylor ought to voice him instead [3] [50]. [38]
Maybe Fergus, Farkle and Felicia, Shrek and Fiona’s triplets could be aged up a little in Shrek 5, possibly providing some small character development beyond their infancies [36] [37]. [39]

The Shrek franchise may be iconic, but it has never been immune to criticism. Quite unfortunately, the musical adaption of the first Shrek film is not every fan’s Happily Ever After potion for various reasons [5] [15] [32] [35]. Reflecting on the less positive reception of Shrek The Third [33], I thought the way Puss and Donkey’s bodies were swapped as Merlin cast his teleportation spell was quite unnecessary and hardly provided effectiveness in terms of storytelling [37]. The same problem applies to Buck Wild caring for a pumpkin as if it were a baby in Ice Age: Collision Course [21]. I still remember my fiancé expressing his disapproval of Shrek’s moodiness and selfish reflection on the times before his marriage after his outburst at his children’s birthday party in Shrek Forever After [36] [58] [67] [68]. Hopefully, the fifth Shrek movie will not make the same mistakes Ice Age: Collision Course made, such as having too many comic reliefs in one story [10] [21]. As important it would also be to not recycle too many elements from the previous films, which is the mistake I believe that Dumb And Dumber To made [18] [19] [71], it would be quite imperative to ensure completely new ones would not only be consistent but undeniably effective [63].
I am up for Shrek being his usual cynical self in a fifth film, but not to the point where he once again disregards what he must be grateful for [36] [58]. Remember when Woody knew not to make a certain mistake again in Toy Story 4 [55]? There also could be a reduced amount of pop culture references, along with arguably better humour for a fifth film to not seem like a somewhat rehash of Shrek The Third [33] [37]. [58]
At least the musical is not as lame as throwing a coin in the well, according to Arthur Pendragon [3]. Anyone up for pizza later [26]? [46]
In conclusion, the development of a “Shrek 5” film could eventually evolve by the name of “Shrek the Fifth” or some other fitting title in honour of bringing our unlikely green hero back on the big screen after the success of Puss In Boots: The Last Wish [8] [9]. Sometimes, it may be best to bring a beloved franchise back to its roots in the best way possible as the execution of a new idea might make you want to scream and rip your hair out [31]. Furthermore, the fifth Shrek movie could elevate DreamWorks’ current success even further with those nostalgic early and mid-2000s vibes [8] [34] [35] [60]. On the other green hand, somebody could want to make a deal with Rumpelstiltskin and make the ogre’s return disappear from existence [36] [67] [68]. In the meantime, as we follow our passions and spread kindness [20] [23], we ought to look forward to new enlightenments in the new year [64], such as a new look for Rochelle Goyle from the Monster High franchise this Spring [28], The Super Mario Bros. Movie this April and a remake of Lollipop Chainsaw at some point [17] [69] [70] [72]. As unnecessary as a fifth chapter sounds after the success of Shrek Forever After nearly thirteen years ago [36], perhaps the timeline would not need to be rewritten after all [63] [67] [68].
Could new glitter be gold? Shrek could be a star, back and bold [51]! [59]

More Powered Up Potential Of The Forthcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie

After the mostly positive reception of the teaser trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie [81] [82], my fellow Nintendo nerds and I got to watch the second one just in time after wishing the Nintendo Wii U a happy 10th anniversary [10] [36] [52]. It may have been considered questionable to cast Chris Pratt instead of Charles Martinet as Mario, but I still hold no ill will towards Pratt in the plumber’s shoes [81] [82]. Like last time, there is an introduction hosted by Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri, except that it also features two other voice actors: Anya Taylor-Joy and Seth Rogan, along with an outro featuring Miyamoto discussing the portrayal of one of the characters [36]. The fact that Rogan’s dog is named after Princess Zelda from The Legend of Zelda is so precious [30] [36]! Shortly after the full potential for Sonic Prime reached for a new wave of stardom with the latest trailer and fans of the fifth generation of the My Little Pony franchise watched the festive beginning of a third chapter [66] [67] [76], let us analyse the further potential of The Super Mario Bros. Movie presented in the second official trailer [36] [52]. After all, there have been some compassionate and talented people who deeply appreciated my efforts in writing an analysis [4].
I may be into the hellishness of Helluva Boss and the fourth wall wreckage of Deadpool these days [7] [18] [45] [77] [80], but I’ll always have room in my heart for the Super Mario franchise [24] [25] [26] [27] [28] [29]. [33]
As I have mentioned before, Illumination Entertainment has not been immune to criticism from critics [81] [82], but The Super Mario Bros. Movie could help the company gain some new credibility. Let’s-a-go! [52] [36]

Reflecting on Mario’s appearance, some of us can see the resemblance of Fix-It Felix from Wreck-It Ralph [83]. The second trailer begins with him entering an arena with a crowd chanting his name [36] [52]. Unfortunately, his match with an old enemy becomes unsuccessful seemingly at first as another sign of the plot being a new origin. Moreover, other comedic struggles of mastering his video game counterpart’s skills include getting smooched by a Cheep Cheep and getting hit by an obstacle that thankfully does not consist of real fireballs [26] [27] [28]. He is then seen fixing a sink in a different setting that must be part of the real world, showing he is primarily a plumber from Brooklyn [36] [52]. There is also a moment of him soaring in his tanooki suit [9]. And no, PETA! It is NOT the result of him murdering and skinning a raccoon [9] [41]! And what is this? A kart race on a rainbow road [24] [25]?! Again, this is not his first time sounding American as he also spoke in an American accent in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! and Hotel Mario [26] [52] [56] [64] [65]. Surely, his voice would be considered more convincing in the French dub [62] [63], but it would still be more important to establish some engaging character progression within a re-established origin [81] [82].
All toasters toast toast, right [56]? Well, at least Mario in the English dub does not sound like Detective Grub from Rayman: The Animated Series [37] [38]. Not to diss any fellow analysers, but I am sure that the theory of him having antisocial personality disorder will be so last decade once we witness his overall portrayal in The Super Mario Bros. Movie [40]. [36]

Luigi will be in fact separated from his brother at some point but will later reunite with him as their journeys collide [36] [52]. I feel bad for him as he gets part of his moustache slowly pulled, then ripped off by Bowser during some fast talking after he gets captured, but I just know that he will learn to face his fears like he does in the Luigi’s Mansion series [23]. There is a brief moment of the two brothers bumping their fists together in what appears to be Brooklyn as an obvious sign of their healthy brotherhood [36] [52]. As for his adventure in a new world, I believe there is some potential for him to try a power-up, such as an Ice Flower [26]. Luigi may not be voiced by Charles Martinet in the imminent film [36] [52], but at least he does not sound a little like Larry Laffer from the Leisure Suit Larry franchise [2] [56]. As we get to see more of him in the second trailer after wishing Miles “Tails” Prower a happy 30th anniversary of his debut [47] [49], we shall root for him as he yearns to reunite with his brother within a re-established origin as if the 1993 live-action film was never made [36] [52] [81] [82].
Someday, this version of Luigi…will be famous [60]! He may be no Mr. L who will stare into your soul [16] [54], but he may just be worth rooting for, even if he may win by doing absolutely nothing [15]. Admittedly, I used to think he was named “Larry” before I got to know the Super Mario franchise. [36]

I knew my homegirl, Princess Peach would make an appearance in the second trailer, especially after seeing an official image of the iconic stained-glass window [33] [51]. She is voiced by the lovely Anya Taylor-Joy, which somehow suits a new aspect of her personality that is expressed by how she warns the Toads about Bowser’s intrusion and how she marches in what appears to be her biker outfit that is later seen in an epic kart race with a helmet [11] [36] [52]. She also appears to be Mario’s trainer as part of his re-established origin, which would be a sign of a romance blooming later on. Furthermore, it turns out that she will be an ally instead of a damsel-in-distress as she is later seen in her fire dress [27]. But then again, there could be a moment when she is vulnerable enough to be held hostage [26] [28]. Since Taylor-Joy is skilled in singing [12], can the princess sing a song at some point, most preferably in the ending credits? I still miss Perry, her parasol pal from Super Princess Peach [29], but her portrayal in the forthcoming movie could disapprove the theory that she has Histrionic Personality Disorder as a rarely seen side of her will strike again [36] [52] [58].
The top of Princess Peach’s hair is smaller in this art style [50]. If only she had thought of wearing a helmet with her biker outfit in Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 8 [24] [25]. Taylor-Joy’s voice is quite good for Peach [52], but I honestly think it would suit Rosalina better [24] [25] [27] [28]. [36]
Who will Mario face in the arena? No other than Donkey Kong 36] [52]! The two opponents are on what appears to be the top of a highly familiar tower [22]. On the throne in the arena is Cranky Kong [36] [52]. I still suppose that he will talk about several aspects of his days of being the original Donkey Kong, possibly including some backstory on how he used to be a performer in a circus [81] [82]. According to Miyamoto in the second trailer’s outro, the current Donkey Kong will be portrayed as a comic relief character in the film [36]. This could add up to Seth Rogan’s full potential of portraying him in a way that would be heavily preferred over his portrayal in the corny but interesting Donkey Kong Country cartoon [61] [81] [82]. Surely, there ought to be more to his character in the film than just beating the shrooms out of him like a carefree jerk [36] [52] [81] [82]. If not, there can be always a shining sample of deep character development in a sequel if there is motivation from the movie becoming a hit. Aside from some hopefulness regarding the Kongs’ portrayals in the imminent movie [35] [62], I still believe the Famicon port of Donkey Kong’s 40th anniversary will be celebrated sometime after its theatrical release [1] [81] [82].
So, he’s finally here!
All rendered for you!
He is Mario’s
Foe in Trailer Two [36] [52]!
Free feel to facepalm
At this small mishap…
That is basically…
Me trying to rap!
Huh [57]! [36]
What else can I say about JACK BLACK AS BOWSER!!! [81] [82]? As previously stated, it is assumed that the tyrannical king will successfully capture the princess at some point and possibly express some romantic interest in her, aside from how he states his prime goal of ruling that world whilst confronting Luigi in the second trailer [36] [52], very much like the Brain [6]. Aside from his evilness, he might as well have some humorous moments with some of his minions to keep up with the light-heartedness of the film [81] [82], like The Devil and Henchman in The Cuphead Show [21]. I am once again impressed with the tone and gruffness Black put into Bowser’s ruthlessness [36] [52]. Could his son Bowser Jr. also make an appearance in the film [26] [27] [38]? If not, the lad might as well be in a sequel sometime after the movie becomes a success. Moreover, it would be shocking to see Bowser return in a sequel…as Dry Bowser [24] [25]! How can Bowser’s evil plan be foiled in a long-overdue idea for an animated film? [36] [52] And how much sinning is there to be done before a sinner must bow down to Lucifer Morningstar in his updated design for the forthcoming animated television show titled “Hazbin Hotel” [13] [73] [74]?

Here is one of the official character posters for promoting the imminent film. [53]

Anything to say about the other characters who appeared in the second trailer? A Toad voiced by a different member of the cast who is wearing a tuxedo jacket with a matching bowtie proclaims that the tribe is too adorable to be a threat against Bowser [36] [52], which is agreeable…but debatable to a specific extent [26] [27]. As for the Toad we saw in the previous trailer [62] [81] [82], he is seen watching Mario and Donkey Kong’s duel by the princess and is later egging the red-hatted plumber on during a big quest [36] [52]. The loveable and colourful Yoshi race makes a brief appearance, which is even more faithfulness to the charm of the main Super Mario series [26]. On a darker note, many of Bowser’s minions appear in his volcanic kingdom, which shows quite a lot of ambition put in one scene [36] [52]. I wonder if Rosalina will make a surprise appearance near the resolution or in a sequel if the movie becomes successful [28]. I may believe that Taylor-Joy’s voice would suit her better [12] [36], but who knows who could voice the galactic sweetheart if there was a sequel? As effective as the role of the noble toad who joins Mario and Peach seems to be, the large number of minor roles shows a large amount of dedication to enriched faithfulness [36] [52].
Here is the Toad voiced by Keegan-Michael Key on another official poster. [53]

What else is there to offer in terms of assuring the best visuals in an animated experience [36] [52] [62]? Firstly, I have never seen the iconic stained-glass window of Peach this captivating before [33] [51]. As previously mentioned, there is a brief reference to the classic Donkey Game arcade game from 1981 in the arena [1] [22]. The moment of Bowser’s doom ship hovering from a huge storm cloud and towards Princess Peach’s castle is sure to bring on some tension [36] [52]. I thought I would never see a field of Fire Flowers until the appearance of Peach in her fire outfit in the second trailer. I was bewitched by the interpretation of Rainbow Road which is elevated by the fast-paced action of the racers. There are a lot of great new textures shown in the second texture, most notably Donkey Kong’s fur. Various effects include the pink lights surrounding the flag where Peach slumps in disappointment during Mario’s training and the gust through the colourful clouds where the two plumbers reunite. As for the real world, it will indeed be rather simplistic within some realism. The animation in the upcoming film is quite a step up from the animation in the first Despicable Me film [8] [62] [81] [82].

As bewildering as it is to see the cover of the physical Legendary edition of Marvel’s Midnight Suns feature Lilith, a demonic Venom and a demonic Hulk in front of a fiery green aura [20] [69], it is enlightening to see a new interpretation of the Mushroom Kingdom and several other worlds in the Mario galaxies rendered by Illumination Entertainment [52] [62]. [36]

Overall, the potential of The Super Mario Bros. Movie has gotten bigger as if it took a red mushroom [36] [52]. More adventures for our Nintendo nerds in 2023 include a new wave of LEGO Mario series and Fire Emblem Engage [17] [31] [32] [35]. Aside from the film being likely to succeed in April 2023, what awaits the plumber’s speedy sports rival after the success of Sonic Frontiers and the release of Sonic Prime [46] [76]? Well, there will be new content in Sonic Frontiers that include a photo mode, new Koco to befriend and a new story throughout 2023 [48], which can lead to a second wave of positive reception after a great year for the blue speedster [46]. Can Wade and Ember truly attract like the opposites they are in Pixar’s Elemental [42]? Could there be another spin-off of the Toy Story franchise centred on Sherriff Woody’s origin and the legacy of the puppet show he starred in back in the 1950s [43]? As for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, I believe that it can leave an inspirational impact if it receives mostly positive reception after its release [36] [52] [81] [82]. During the wait, let us celebrate the 50th anniversary of Atari in old-school style [3] [34].

Aside from The Super Mario Bros. movie, there is a lot to look forward to in 2023 [81] [82], including the bigger outcome of Storyteller [78] [79], a global tour themed after the third generation of the Pokémon franchise in Pokémon GO [59], more Polly Pocket compact playsets and perhaps the official French dub of the first few episodes of Helluva Boss [19] [44] [70] [71]. Could there also be an “eighteenth birthday” edition of Twilight, the controversial but popular novel by Stephenie Meyer [68]? [36]
It is rather bizarre how Mario’s movie career is hugely similar to The Grinch’s [55]. During the wait for the best outcome of The Super Mario Bros. Movie [81] [82], stay tuned for some more song parodies and so on written by yours truly soon [14] [72] [75], even if I eventually have no choice but to leave Twitter [5] [39]! Until then! [53]
