The Upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie - Powered Up Potential?

As previously mentioned in our expansion on the history of Pauline’s character and another collaboration with Deadpool after the announcement of Wolverine appearing in Deadpool 3 [83] [86] [89], the official trailer for the new Super Mario Bros. film from Illumination Entertainment awaited us. After our fellow Mario kart racers finally engaged in a new Battle Mode in Mario Kart Tour for the first few times [34] [37], we finally got to watch it with hopes that the same mistakes from the live-action film based on the franchise by Allied Filmmakers, formerly known as “Lightmotive” will not be repeated [39] [43] [45] [75]. Previously, in September 2021 during last year’s Nintendo Direct, many Nintendo nerds reacted to the cast for the film, including…you guessed it! Chris Pratt as Mario, which led to a specific internet meme [5] [21] [38]. There is something deeply humbling about the cooperation between Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri during the introduction before the trailer in this year’s Nintendo Direct [39] [45]. As a hopeful Nintendo nerd who would love a reboot of Otenba Peach-hime featuring elements of the manga strips from issues of Famitsu DS+GameCube+Advanced magazine based on Super Princess Peach [62] [63], I am ready to head down the pipe of hope after giggling at more of Wade Wilson’s wisecracks and self-awareness throughout the second volume of Deadpool: Samurai [20] [39] [43] [75]. 

It is rather enlightening to finally see the extended potential of an animated film based on the Super Mario Bros. franchise during the 30^th anniversary of Cartoon Network [9]. Since I have been a blogger for five years [80], I will not dare stoop certain lows in future articles [2] [7] [12] [19] [47] [91]. [67]

I am aware that Illumination Entertainment is not immune to criticism as Minions was considered a mediocre prequel/spin-off of the Despicable Me films and The Secret Life of Pets was criticised for its premise being too similar to the first Toy Story film [26] [49] [71] [72] [82] [83]. Will the company luckily earn respect for the best outcome of The Super Mario Bros. Movie possible [38] [42] [73]? I know it is almost Halloween [67], but I sure hope none of the executives got scared by the fates many fanmade games met during the early stages of the film’s production [75]. [67]

The trailer begins with Bowser’s tyranny, leading to tension within the revealment of some conflict [39] [43] [75]. I have expected to see the interpretation of him provide some potential to be a comic relief villain since he is ironically voiced by Jack Black who also voiced Po in the Kung Fu Panda franchise and Lenny in Shark Tale [23] [24] [49]. However, he still acts like the usual tyrant he is within Black’s masterfully gritty performance in the first trailer [39] [43] [75]. Nonetheless, seeing how the snowballs from the army of penguins are powerless to him is rather amusing. How his doom ship intimidatingly arrives at an icy castle vaguely reminds me of the introduction of Super Mario Galaxy [36]. Aside from how menacing Bowser is as he appears to have full potential to be a movie villain to make up for how unconvincing his human counterpart was in the live-action movie from the mid-1990s that was considered a failure [39] [43] [45] [65] [75], could there be a little more humour involving the Boss of Bwahaha in the second trailer and so on? Who knows when he will plan to capture a certain princess in pink? Dare to take on the King of the Koopas’ mighty LEGO form [28]? 

“JACK BLACK AS BOWSER!!!” - joshscorcher, 2021 [5]. [67]

After Bowser receives a power star, the next scene shows Mario arriving at the Mushroom Kingdom, seemingly for the first time as the film must be a whole new origin for him [39] [43] [75]. I suppose he will arrive from Brooklyn as a re-establishment of how he and his Luigi used to reside in the real world [45] [65] [81] [82], which will provide a journey of character progression primarily for a younger new audience. He ought to find a ? block throughout a journey of self-discovery as that item has been featured in a teaser poster at New York Comic Con [67]. Additionally, there ought to be an elevating moment of him finding a Fire Flower for the first time. How this version of Mario is voiced by Chris Pratt, who also voiced Emmet in The LEGO Movie and The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part [70] [71], reminds me of how he had an American accent in Saturday Supercade and the cartoons based on Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World [16] [17] [78] [79]. Do you not suppose the version of Mario in The Super Mario Bros. has an ex-girlfriend named “Daniella” [59], no? Providing an origin story for Mario in the film can boost its credibility in terms of captivating writing.

Mr. Pratt has had some experience with Nintendo’s mascot long before he became a brand new voice for him [39] [43]. Hopefully, he will not regret playing the role, unlike how Bob Hoskins described his role in the 1993 film as the “worst thing he ever did” [65]. [67]

It is a bit strange how Toad was expected to sound like the narrator from the two seasons of the cartoon based on Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss [27]. But quite convincingly, it sounds like Keegan-Michael Key has put on some high-pitched tones for the role in the first trailer [39] [43] [75]. I believe that voice, along with the wittiness will also apply to many other Toads in the village near the hill where Princess Peach’s castle is on [67]. The Toad who meets Mario first in The Super Mario Bros. ought to soon have the same nobility as Yellow Toad and Blue Toad in New Super Mario Bros. Wii and New Super Mario Bros. U [32] [33], considering how he appears to have befriended him after mistaking a regular mushroom for a poisoned one, leading him to Princess Peach’s castle afterwards [39] [43] [75]. This Toad and several others can be comic relief characters for the sake of light-heartedness, but it would be advised to not make the sources of humour too similar to the cred of the iconic yellow henchmen for The Super Mario Bros. Movie to maintain its purpose of being faithful to the games [26] [67].

Apparently, Toad ought to tell the difference between regular mushrooms and poison mushrooms. [39] [45] [75], somewhat like an experienced Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels player can tell which mushroom is a poison one [90]. [39] [45] [75]

After the mesmerising appearance of the film’s official logo and the list of names of the cast, there is a rather bleak scene of Luigi running away from a Dry Bones army and trying to shut two doors against them [39] [43] [75]. I could bet you one hundred coins for an extra life if he encounters a bunch of Boos at some point as a brief call-back to Luigi’s Mansion [31] [32] [33]. Voiced by Charlie Day [38] [67], he will hopefully learn to face his fears within an origin, being just as adventurous as his brother, which had always made him worthy of the title “Player Two” [32] [33]. Surely, he can also discover the power of a Fire Flower or discover the power of an Ice Flower and learn to master it within his character progression [32] [33]. I can already imagine a sequel to the film introducing Princess Daisy as Luigi’s love interest, just like in the unsuccessful live-action film from 1993 [13] [45] [65]. I understand why it would have been preferable to cast Charles Martinet as both Mario and Luigi for The Super Mario Bros., but at least making them sound American again after so long with the performances of Chris Pratt and Charlie Day does not contradict their nationality [78] [79]. 

Hopefully, Mr. Day will not regret playing the role of Luigi either, unlike how John Leguizamo disliked his experience of co-starring in the 1993 film [65]. [67]

We are yet to see the appearance of Princess Peach voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy, which I believe will be featured in the second trailer soon [38] [67]. I remember my homegirl having a little courage and occasional sass when she was known as “Princess Toadstool” and had reddish-brown hair in the cartoons based on Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World [78] [79]. But in terms of maintaining notable elements of the modern era, I suppose Peach will be a graceful pacifist, most notably when she gets kidnapped [32]. And who knows? She can perhaps bake a cake for the Mario brothers sometime after she gets rescued [35]. I hope to see a deeper meaning of Mario’s relationship with the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom in the forthcoming film, especially as part of their relationship’s origin that might as well be the modern equivalent of Super Mario Bros.: Peach-Hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen!, also known as “Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission To Rescue Princess Peach!” [66]. As much as I am up for seeing that, I also hope that Rachel and Randall will have a real wedding in the next live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie or Sonic the Series [51] [53]. 

Surely, there can be some form of self-empowerment for my homegirl at some point. I would also love to see that in a new Peach-Hime manga [62] [63] [83] [86]. [63]

We are also yet to see how Donkey Kong and his grandfather will be portrayed in the film [38] [67]. I will expect some comparison between the version of Donkey Kong in the film voiced by Seth Rogan and the interpretation of him in his own cartoon based on the Donkey Kong Country series from my fellow Nintendo nerds [46] [47] [57]. I suppose DK can be Mario’s first foe, climbing to the top of a construction site with possibly Princess Peach as his hostage as part of a recreation of the modern version of his grandfather’s legacy on a baddie on Game & Watch, as well as an arcade antagonist [29] [30] [60]. Alternatively, that could be performed by Cranky Kong in a flashback, along with some backstory on how he used to be a circus animal [16] [17] [64]. Even though last year would be the 40th anniversary of Donkey Kong, the arcade game that started it all [29] [83] [86], we can still get technically celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Game & Watch port this year and the Famicon/NES version next year [30] [60], which is what I believe Nintendo will aim for in terms of truly celebrating a big anniversary sometime after the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie [67]. 

The Donkey Kong Country cartoon may have been negatively received [46] [47] [57], but there is hope for Donkey Kong and Cranky Kong’s appearances in The Super Mario Bros. Movie to not be associated with a mean-spirited type of fourth-wall-breaking that not even Deadpool would be overly self-defensive enough to commit [4] [10] [20]. [61]

As seen in the first official poster, the interpretation of Mushroom Kingdom for the film is richly detailed with Princess Peach’s castle at the top of a huge hill [67]. The characters’ attires are convincingly textured, most notably Mario’s [39] [43] [67] [75]. I was expecting the visuals to not be exactly like the graphics in the promotional videos for the Nintendo Switch [40] [41], thus not being exactly like the faithfulness of the Ratchet & Clank movie promoting the reimagining of the first Ratchet & Clank game in 2016 [44] [54], but the Illumination Entertainment style is impressive enough [39] [43] [75]. Speaking of impressive, I am amazed at the design of Bowser’s doom ship, especially at his lands by the icy castle. The snow in the icy wasteland being ambushed is top-notch, nearly matching the quality of snow from Frozen [14]. And not to mention that the lava does not look like tomato soup [87] [88]. The mushrooms surrounding Mario during his arrival are a lot more colourful than the Mushroom Planet in the two live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movies, but I do not think that will change Sonic’s mind about mushrooms [39] [43] [52] [53] [67] [75]. Some whacky yet convincing animation in The Super Mario Bros. Movie would make up for the cheesiness and unconvincing interpretations of some characters from the live-action film from 1993 [45] [58].

Switching from live-action to animation worked for Bee Movie, right [70]? I do not doubt that future films from Nintendo Pictures will have exceptional animation as well. [15]. [67]

Who would have thought an animated film from Illumination Entertainment based on the Super Mario Bros. franchise would have this much potential to be as ironically successful as Sonic the Hedgehog’s first live-action film [39] [43] [52] [75]? And who would have thought there will be an upcoming series starring Rosaline, Romeo’s former love interest in Romeo & Juliet [1] [11] [89]? With impressive animation and signs of some engaging build-ups in the first trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie [39] [43] [75], there is still more potential to see in the second one as we hope for the outcome to excel. Speaking of hopes for critical acclaim, I am sure Halle Bailey will do a great job at portraying Ariel in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, like how Emma Watson portrayed Belle quite well in the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast [76] [89], despite the likeliness of her not being given enough direction when it came to convincing facial expressions [57]. As for what else awaits our Nintendo nerds, there will be a new Splatfest promoting Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet next month [55]. I hope some of my fellow gamers enjoy the further female empowerment in Overwatch 2 during the wait for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is set to be released in 2023 [39] [42] [43] [75].

What else is there to look forward to in 2023? Hopefully, a change to abolish the dehumanisation within conservatorships in honour of ensuring that disabled people will always have their basic human rights [3] [6]. There also ought to be further empowerment of disabled people in businesses, leading to some inspiration within some outstanding representation. [67]

As for the rest of late 2022, I will look forward to yet another episode of Helluva Boss later this month [18]. And be sure to wish Candy Crush Saga a happy 10th anniversary as you save plenty of sweets for trick-or-treating cosplayers this Halloween [8] [21] [67]! I know that a certain mercenary from Marvel or a vaguely different version of him summoned from another universe will save a lollipop for me [20] [25]! Let us keep an eye out for more footage within a second trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie that can increase its potential even further [39] [43] [75]. [67]
