The Godly Legacy of God’s Gang

Disclaimer:
This is an analysis of an animated web series that contains one parody of an infamous far-right hate group in real life in one episode and one brief sample of hellish imagery regarding the portrayals of another bunch of antagonists. Reader discretion is advised.
The pilot episode of God’s Gang, an animated action-adventure webs eries created by Nimrod Avraham May premiered back in October 2023 [31] [32] [33]. The title “God’s Gang” sounds like the title of a cartoon with a religious agenda [28] [29], doesn’t it? Surely, cartoons consisting of religious messages have received flak for not being visually appealing, providing some homophobic undertones or trying to discourage questioning faith in the slightest [77] [91], but the message in God’s Gang is centred on tolerance and equality between people who follow different religions [26] [27] [85], despite some criticism regarding mild stereotyping [102]. The aim of the series is quite like how the purpose of the character Mahboub, a bilingual Arab muppet from the Israeli version of Sesame Street known as “Rechov Sumsum” who spoke Arabic and Hebrew was to unite young Israeli and Arab viewers [24] [70]. The third episode was released a day after the release of the gameplay trailer highlighting the aspects of The Sims 4: Business & Hobbies [30] [97], which has motivated me to give my thoughts on the series. Whether you consider yourself a theist, an atheist or an agnostic, let us get a little spiritual as we discuss the reputation of God’s Gang while Disney devotees celebrate the 75th anniversary of the iconic animation interpretation of Cinderella that is considered a Disney classic [22] [28] [38] [94] [95].
And the show’s epic theme song is stuck back in my head [30] [34] [42]. I think Mr. Dooves ought to do an acapella cover sometime [39] [98] [99] [100] [101]. [30] [34] [42]
The heroes’ designs and traits show they come from different religious backgrounds [28]. Taekwonhindu is the representative of Hinduism with the ability to fight with extra arms like Angel Dust in the pilot for Hazbin Hotel [30] [36] [61], but holy as a reference to the Goddesses Lakshmi and Durga [2] [96]. Chris Cross is a Baptist with a cross on his necklace, speaking in a Southern accent like Millie from Helluva Boss [63] [65] [66]. Eric Cartman from South Parkbetter think before he spews antisemitism because Ninjew represents Judaism and is skilled in ninjutsu…and snarky comebacks [3] [31] [34]. You can tell that SunMuslim represents Islam by his attire and I think he would be a great ASMRtist with his hypnotic storytelling aside from how he only fights enemies at war [30] [32] [75]. I find it quite imaginative how certain religious items and symbols are used as weaponry, such as the Star of David being used as a shuriken and different prayers said and hymns sang harmoniously to energise captured blue whales [29] [32] [34]. The diversity seems about as naturally portrayed as the young main cast of Codename: Kids Next Door [15]. I simply did not deny the creative potential in each of these heroes when I first saw them and I suspect there could be two new members respectfully representing Buddhism, Paganism and Shinto in the future of the series [28] [29] [85].
While the controversial but intellectually stimulating cartoons created by DarkMatter2525 make jabs at biblical stories and religious thinking in a satirical manner aimed at adults [56] [57] [58] [59] [60], God’s Gang is a light-hearted action-adventure aimed at children and teenagers aged between nine and nineteen starring a diverse cast who do not shove their beliefs down each other’s throats and show that they can fight together as one [28] [29] [85]. [33] [34]
Let us discuss the portrayals of the supporting stars. Ms. Dogma, the operator who calls the team when there is trouble refers to God as “you know who” [31] [34], much like how Angelmouse keeps the Lord’s name anonymous to avoid taking it in vain [9]. Her design is quite adorable and her role is like Admiral DeGill’s in Atomic Betty [31] [34] [54]. LeDove, the pigeon may be considered a rude and snooty French man stereotype like Le Spatula from “All That Glitters”, an episode from the fourth season of SpongeBob SquarePants [21] [68] [102], but he still serves as the team’s eye in the sky and could be a great rival to Pesto from Animaniacs [111]. Moreover, at least he is not a certain Italian guest at some hotel in Malta [19]. I personally think the supporting characters’ character can be levelled up with a little depth in a likely future of the series, which worked for Sallie May in the first Helluva Short and ought to work for Vassago in another released at some point this year [7] [62] [67]. This ought to especially apply to LeDove as Squeaky, the incarnation of the mouse in Green Eggs and Ham adapted into a parody of Jean Valjean from Les Misérables in the television series on Netflix had a backstory and sang emotionally about it, despite his accent and aggression towards Sam-I-Am in jail resulting in him being the same stereotype [20] [43] [106] [107].
LeDove’s charisma when it comes to inspiring comrades is still admirable and at least he seems like he can safely eat one of Chris Cross’ burgers [37] [42]. Well, in terms of the series’ logic and not in real life, that is [81]. I understand that a cartoon does not always have to be fully logical though. [30] [34] [42]
Lisa Fishman did a swell job at voicing Ms. Dogma [30] [31] [34]. [31] [34]
There is hardly a competent action-adventure story without an antagonist. As (not so subtle) representatives of The Devil aside from their human disguises, the Corpo-Creeps look like a business that could be a rival to the I.M.P. from Helluva Boss [29] [63] [64] [66]. The TTT, the crooks who appear in “What’s Cooking” are a parody of the Ku Klux Klan, which is edgy for a cartoon aimed at a younger audience but still adds to the show’s message of equality by making a notorious hate group antagonistic [26] [29] [42] [104]. The mad scientist trope may be rather generic and cliched, but how they corrupted the horses on a carousel with pistol-like devices in the first part of “Love is in the Airhole” is pretty cool, despite sinister intentions of it in constant to the innocent inanimate horses from the carousel in Mary Poppins [29] [55]. The aliens from the second part of the first episode have a strange goal, as faintly forgettable as they are [32] [34], but at least trying to stop a home planet from smelling awful is nowhere near as measly as the aftermath of the slaughtering fans of a succubus and the summoning a giant fish monster being salvaged for a parking space in the third episode of the first season of Helluva Boss [66]. There could be some potential for a few more antagonists if the series progresses into two seasons, but that would require popular demand and a stable budget.
Oof! And some of us thought the Smurfs represented the KKK [25]. Who knows when Dalida will make an appearance [29]? [29]
I also wonder if each of these demons will be named individually at some point in the continuation of the third episode [29] [30]. [30]
As revealed in two teasers [36] [40], the plot of the third episode titled “We Didn’t Start The Fire: Wildfire and The Mysterious Hero” is the holy heroes coming to the rescue during a forest fire [30]. Oddly enough, “What’s Cooking”, the previous episode is much shorter than the first episode, making it more like a minisode [42] [67], unlike the first episode being split into three parts almost two years ago [31] [32] [33]. Nonetheless, the third episode may be considered the most effective one so far for introducing a mysterious new character who will be explained later and possibly providing some more character depth for the pantheistic quartet of heroes throughout the biggest conflict yet in the next part [30]. Aside from how each plot in the series so far is decently structured, some character depth here and there and some jokes I like, such as a reference to Finding Nemo in the second part of “Love is in the Airhole” and the bloopers at the end of “What’s Cooking” that make the series worth watching [23] [30] [32] [42], I strongly approve of the message of compassion and teamwork regardless of religious differences as there has been quite a lot of religious conflicts that lead to harmful assumptions and unfair generalisations in real life [27] [28]. I can even smell the potential of a second season or a line of minisodes being written as competently with some more character depth and creativity.
A vague but notable example of character development in the series is Ninjew reflecting on how being short has its downsides and feeling like he was “too short” for the fight in the first part of the first episode but later realising that he can balance on the gush of water from a whale’s blowhole before hurling SuMuslim’s fireball falafel at the spaceship [31] [33] [34]. [31] [34]
The second teaser for the third episode sparked my curiosity on this year’s Galentine’s Day and the first part was worth the short wait [30] [36] [44]. I wholeheartedly praise the writing of the series for not hammering religious messages in a preachy manner to the point of discouraging free thinking, which is a sin apparently committed by Bibleman: The Animated Adventures [91]. Instead, God’s Gang focuses more on action and a little creativity aside from religious undertones [30] [34] [42], much like Veggie Tales [91]. Even though the target audience is children and teenagers, I believe adults can enjoy the series as well, especially for its strong sense of diversity [93]. [30]
Aside from the wholesomeness of the moment when the woodland creatures receive some telepathic hypnotherapy to gain confidence in helping God’s Gang gather water from the river in the third episode and the Corpo Creeps’ debut near the end of it, another new character has been introduced in “We Didn’t Start The Fire: Wildfire and the Mysterious Hero” [30]. They appear as a silhouette resembling a ninja and are yet to be revealed at some point in the next chapter of saving the forest. Reflecting on my suggestion to increase the interfaith inclusion of the series by introducing a hero representing another religion, I have a theory that the new supporting character will represent Shinto and it is clear that they are not affected by the religious differences the members of God’s Gang follow as they put out the flames before they could engulf the shelter constructed by Ninjew [45]. It will not be long until the third episode of the second season of Always Bratz premieres on Instagram and TikTok tomorrow before the reveal and overall portrayal of the new co-star in the next part of “We Didn’t Start The Fire” very soon [13] [30].
Whether my theory on this ninja-like hero is correct or debunked, they will at least contribute to the plot in an impactful supporting role [30] [36] [40]. [30]
The head writer of God’s Gang is Rob Kutner, a five Emmy Award winner who previously worked on Angry Birds: Summer Madness and several more projects [38] [47]. You can tell that the series is in good hands in terms of writing if the head writer is undoubtedly experienced and I expect the rest of the third episode to provide the same competence as the writing in the first one [30] [34]. [38]
What can I say about the overall animation style you have to see to believe [30] [34] [42], no matter which faith you follow? The colour palette and art style are about as vibrant and appealing cartoony as Brawlhalla, especially in terms of portraying mild fantasy violence [11] [12]. The character design is about as varied as the main and supporting cast of Supernormal, despite a few examples of cloning and recolouring in both cartoons [10] [30] [32]. Even though the characters’ movements are not as elegantly smooth as the movements in Lackadaisy [49] [50] [51] [52], the animation in God’s Gang is lively and quite comparable to the animation in Steven Universe when it comes to animating some form of diversity in contrast to the needless head bobbing and racist depictions in the first and only season of It’s Fred! [14] [90] [108] [109]. I especially adore the moment of two whales from different packs pose together like the yin-yang symbol near the end of the second part of “Love Is In the Airhole” [32] [34], as well as the ocean in the distance being coloured beautifully like a sapphire left in sunlight in “What’s Cooking” [42]. The premise of a team of heroes who follow different religions but accept each other’s differences is elevated by a competent and talented animation team [30] [34] [42].
The comical effects seem to be briefly inspired by fight scenes in an anime and enrich the action as if the cartoon is a comic book that came to life but without words like “POW!”, “BANG!” “BOOM!” in bold font [30] [34] [84]. [30] [36]
How the van is animated when it flies may consist of a faintly unfitting 3D effect and there may have been some inconsistency within the gang’s movement in “What’s Cooking” that appears to be a framerate issue [30] [34] [42], but the animation is still worth a merit if you are familiar with community college and postgraduate university grades in the United Kingdom [83]. [30] [34] [42]
There is another reason why the series earns my seal of approval. Atticus Baldwin, one of the voice actors is an ambassador for Autism In Entertainment, an organisation that was established in May 2022 [30] [85]. Additionally, Tyler Berman is another autistic actor who is part of the cast. It is vital that the same big mistakes that were made during the production of Music will NOT be made again as we aim to provide an increasing number of opportunities for autistic people to succeed [1] [46] [76], despite the struggles they may go through in life [53] [79]. It warms my heart to hear about two autistic voice actors following their passions and I can deeply empathise as an autistic writer who is also passionate about voice acting [82] [85]. Aside from the importance of providing equal opportunities between autistic and neurotypical people [1] [4] [5], it is vital to write autistic characters accurately, respectfully and effectively in the future of entertainment to prevent further alienation, hopelessness and fear [48] [76], which ought to be quite like how four friends who follow different religions are portrayed in a fun and quirky way that is far from how hurtfully dehumanizing those moments in certain Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry and Popeye the Sailor cartoons were [18].
Just as much as a religious person has the right to believe in God, an autistic person has every right to try and succeed without the fear of being judged [1]. [6]

For those who are curious about my religious status, I have considered myself an agnostic for about a decade due to how uncertain it is to know if God exists or not [60], so I am glad to see four heroes who follow different religions working together as one within pantheistic power [26] [28] [29]. Fans of the interfaith adventures can keep praying for more episodes of what can be considered the polar opposite of Helluva Boss as it is only close to being a full trilogy of episodes so far [30] [34] [42] [64], but it still deserved to be officially brought into action after it failed to flourish at some point before the 2020s [41]. Aside from saints seeing potential in more episodes of God’s Gang [30] [34] [42], sinners remain hopeful for a compelling third season of Helluva Boss that could bring Paimon back as a bigger antagonist [8], redeem the estranged father-and-relationship between Stolas and Octavia and finally show what the Envy Ring of Hell is like [16] [65] [87] [88] [110]. It is important to assure your audience that there is hope for outstanding representation and undeniable harmony [27] [71] [78] [93], especially during some difficult times in real life and toxicity on social media [17] [80] [86] [92] [112], thus showing them respect and dignity, compared to the bad examples set for children and irrational responses to criticism in Teen Titans GO! [103] [105].
A special thanks to Xander Ross for informing me about the premise of God’s Gang [85]. I shall look forward to the next chapter of “We Didn’t Start The Fire” [30]. Kudos to Nimrod Avraham May and his creative team for a few excellent interfaith adventures [38] [41]. Let us wish him, his three daughters and his colleagues the best [35] [38]. [42]
