My Little Pony: Pony Life Is Lively And Pony-Packed

Greetings, everypony! It has been under a month since we analysed the official trailer and introduction of My Little Pony: Pony Life [53], a brand new Irish-American animated television based on a new line of My Little Pony toys [1] [12] [24] [41]. After seeing some compilations of clips from the brand new cartoon on Hasbro’s official My Little Pony YouTube channel, I am quite impressed with how it somehow manages to capture most of the charm of the iconic 2010s cartoon that it is based on, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic [21]. As fairly ironic yet well-meaning it is how Burger King has temporarily been referred to as “Burger Queer” in Mexico to show support for LGBT rights [5] [15], it is rather a delightful relief that Pony Life has received a fair amount of acclaim so far [6]. However, it has also received some criticism [14] [50]. With a catchy new theme song stuck in the heads of our bronies and pegasisters [35], let us look into plenty of moments from the new cartoon that aired on Treehouse TV in Canada after its schedule for Discovery Family in America was suddenly pulled [41]. Who does not love including at least one emoji in a video title these days?

So this is My Little Pony today. In the year that quoted Darkwing Duck before it began [17]. [41]

Please allow me to further express my views on the new art style of Pony Life [53]. I adore the mesmerising detail on the irises of the ponies’ eyes. I suppose how the appearances of their cutie remarks have been reduced to only one image in the show was to make the progress of animating the chibi-styled ponies slightly easier. Speaking of cutie marks, I can see that Pony Life also takes place in some point after the Cutie Mark Crusaders finally got their cutie marks in the fifth season of Friendship Is Magic due to how the three fillies’ cutie marks can be noticed during Rarity’s magic show [19] [38]. Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle’s manes are also styled differently, but not as drastically off-putting as Rainbow Dash’s new mane [38]. Despite my slight disapproval of some surreal proportions in the backgrounds [52], my favourite background would be the astrological scene of inside Fluttershy’s mind when she wears Rarity’s potion-infested headband [30]. I think I can be quite used to the new character design of the main characters and the styles of the setting within the reimagining of Friendship Is Magic before the fifth generation is officially established.

Oops! There is a notable animation error that forgets to include Twilight Sparkle’s wings when she demands cleanliness within work stations. Despite an animation error, the animation is still tolerable. [31]

Let us look into some examples of how the Mane Six are portrayed. Fluttershy growing in size when she gets mad is an interesting take on her development [27] [28], quite like how she can successfully confront foes with “the stare” in Friendship Is Magic [26]. It is quite odd to witness Applejack stretch the truth to keep Fluttershy happy since her element is honesty [29], but I suppose it is ultimately for developing a life lesson for a new and younger audience [26]. Reflecting on her fourth-wall break [36], the deed to do so would have been more expected from Pinkie Pie [52]. Nevertheless, I like how she uses her imagination when she drinks some potions to try on:

•        A firefighter helmet [27]
•        A space helmet [27]
•        A pilot’s cap [27]

In addition to the premise of Rarity being inspired to wear a hat like hers [38], I admire how Applejack states that she is independent and is not solely defined by her hate [29]. Pinkie Pie is put in charge of Sugarcube Corner as the series tends to focus on her being the protagonist [39], compared to how Friendship Is Magic’s protagonist was Twilight Sparkle [45]. Nevertheless, there are plenty of premises centring on the other main ponies.

Aye aye, Captain Applejack! [27]

Since Pinkie Pie is now the main character due to how her personality suits the new tone of Pony Life very well, will there eventually be a moment of her driving a brand new car [22]? Other than that, the show could also take place before the finale of Friendship Is Magic as she finally gets to run Sugarcube Corner independently, even though that could ultimately be another sign of the re-imagining being non-canon. [39]

What about the other three main ponies? I found it very sweet and in-character of Twilight Sparkle to offer a storytelling activity in a scenario of a power cut [27]. Rainbow Dash’s competitive nature shown in her promotional video on Hasbro’s YouTube channel was quite concerning to me as it seemed to be taken to the extreme [32], similar to how the reboot of Danger Mouse sometimes portrayed the secret agent’s egoistical attitude to the point where it can be quite obnoxious [7] [8]. Nevertheless, at least there was a sign of the blue pegasus being partially humble when she mentions her friends [32]. It was strangely refreshing to see Rarity wear a cowgirl’s hat that is very similar to Applejack’s, along with how she was hosting a magic show, which would be The Great And Powerful Trixie’s job in Friendship Is Magic [20]. Additionality, she appears to not be fond of camping and nature during the Mane Six’s stroll [27]. Despite a few changes that sacrifice some faithfulness to Friendship Is Magic, I am very pleased to see that the developments of the character have not been greatly downgraded to the very little likeability of how the Teen Titans have been portrayed in Teen Titans Go [51].

Oh. And could the newest Rainbow Dash secretly adore painting her “nails” and eventually dress in style [9] [21] [55]? [32]

Even though I previously stated that Pony Life seems to take place after Twilight Sparkle’s conversion to being an alicorn and the Cutie Mark Crusaders receiving their cutie marks [53], the way Rarity is seen as a magician like Trixie Lulamoon and Applejack is heard breaking the fourth wall like Pinkie Pie can lead to some of us believing that it is not canon [36] [38]. [39]

Are there any supporting and other main characters portrayed faithfully? Well, the Cutie Mark Crusaders are seen applauding during Rarity’s magic show. Aside from how Princess Celestia seemed to be interested in television in the trailer [36], she appears to be quite critical when it came to Pinkie Pie’s failed attempt at baking in a far less messy way [34]. I guess not witnessing extremely messy cooking could be essential for being royalty, but that should ultimately not overshadow her kind and wise traits from Friendship Is Magic [13]. Let us not forget about Spike, Twilight Sparkle’s assistant who is ironically voiced by two voice actresses and still crushing on Rarity [44]. As for Fancy Pants, it was assuming how he sounded like he did not any potion from her but then exclaimed that he would love some [38]. Apart from the reimagining’s heavier focus on comedy and slice-of-life premises [24] [41], it sure is nice to see some of the characters outside of the Mane Six from Friendship Is Magic again and I would be curious to possibly see how some more of them will be portrayed in a few more episodes of Pony Life before an animated series based on Generation 5 begins.

“You’re fired. [2]” [31]

What about any brand new characters who have appeared exclusively in Pony Life? Bubbles, a new character who is an adorable but inconsiderate cat is the definition of “don’t judge a book by its cover” [28] [34], much like those darn critters from that episode of the fifth season of The Powerpuff Girls [48]. Aside from his rudeness to the Mane Six, I chuckled when I saw that Bubbles’ best friend was a clone of Fluttershy who looks like a hipster named “Buttershy” [28]. Perhaps there ought to be a Buttershy in the second wave of Pony Life figurines before the beginning of Generation 5 [1] [12]. There is also a new male pony named “Dishwater Slog” who is designed quite differently with brown fur, a cutie mark that resembles a slice of pizza and casual but unclean attire to increase the diversity in Pony Life’s interpretation of Ponyville [40]. However, he is the one partly responsible for Rainbow Dash’s competitiveness being taken a bit too far with his rather questionable attitude [37]. Brand new characters making their debut in a new show can at least be refreshing and the immoralities of some of them can be useful for establishing life lessons.

As for the other jerk who challenged Rainbow Dash, I think the moral of his debut would be not to manipulate anyone into being “worse than you” just to feel great about yourself, despite how Dishwater Slog takes pride in being a lazy and ignorant slob [40]. [37]

Another sign of Pony Life being a potentially non-canon reimagining of Friendship Is Magic is the use of modern touchscreen technology [27] [30] [33]. I honestly do not mind seeing the ponies use smartphones and tablets in Pony Life, despite how illogical it would be for a horse to do in real life. After all, the current interpretations of the lovable cast were firstly established in the first few seasons of Friendship Is Magic back in the early 2010s [21], the time the use of smartphones and tablets become increasingly common. Strangely enough, the moment Rainbow Dash spends too long trying to get a new high score on a mobile app that kind of reminds me of Flappy Bird reminds me of a joke reflecting on mobile game addiction from a webisode of the Bratz stop-motion series from 2015 [4] [10]. Moments like Fluttershy peeping “Selfie!” as she holds her smartphone would be more ridiculous if she and the other main six remained like they were in the previous generations that were established during the times when our current touch-screen technology was not there yet [21] [54]. To me, use of today’s touchscreen technology works much better for cartoon characters who were firstly established in the 2010s.

I understand that parodying addiction to mobile games and showing characters taking selfies or recharging their mobile devices can reduce creativity to a degree, but at least they are done by the interpretations of My Little Pony characters that caused their popularity to rapidly increase in the 2010s [3] [21]. [33]

At least the way Applejack placed her smartphone in a mixing bowl for providing light source is quite clever. [27]

Overall, I would say that Pony Life is a mixture of the slice of life genre of My Little Pony Tales [49], the character designs from the Generation 3.5 series and the humour and portrayal of iconic characters from Friendship Is Magic [11] [46] [52]. What an interesting recipe indeed. To be fair, I can say Pony Life is highly likely to not be considered “canon” to the bronies and pegasisters out there, but its heavier focus on comedy can ultimately be a sign of it aiming to also appeal to the unexpected adult male fanbase of Friendship Is Magic [3]. My Little Pony has come a long way since the My Pretty Pony toy back in the early 1980s [47]. For even more filler between Generation 4 and Generation 5, I suppose there can also be an extension of the spin-off based on the Equestria Girls series since there were human versions of Princess Celestia and Princess Luna within the Pony Life toy line [1] [21] [23]. I need to go and write a letter to the current reincarnation of Princess Celestia, informing her that I have learned to bake a delicious cake without making too much mess. Until then, everypony!

Can My Little Pony: Pony Life Make Friendship Magic Again?

Bronies and pegasisters, Hasbro finally presents a brand new trailer for “Pony Life”, a forthcoming animated series that is based on the newest line of toys within the My Little Pony franchise [1] [15] [20]. Before its stated released date, it was unlisted on the company’s official YouTube channel, along with its official introduction possibly to further prevent spoilers for when it airs on Discovery Family [1] [5] [14] [16]. There was a previous trailer for what appears to be “Generation 4.5” that was unfortunately removed from publicity on Hasbro’s YouTube channel possibly due to quite an unsuitable choice of music [6] [22]. I am aware that the redesigns and animation that was rather exaggerated at times received quite a lot of negative reception at first [3] [6]. Nonetheless, I can tell that it simply a spin-off of the 2010s masterpiece, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic due to the return of its iconic and loveable main characters, including Spike the Dragon and a certain pack of talented voice actresses reprising their roles [13] [14]. Unable to get the new catchy and energetic theme song for the upcoming spin-off out of my head, I shall proceed to analyse the trailer and state my thoughts on what it has to offer in Summer 2020 [1] [16].

Feeling good as heck [22]! Well…until the first trailer was privatised [6]. [16]

“Sit back and watch, everypony! We have a new trailer!” [15]

As I look at the new art style of the ponies, it screams “chibi” right at me and looks like a rehash of Generation 3.5 [18] [28]. I like how their hooves are more detailed with thick strands of fur surrounding the top of them, which has also been featured on the toys in the Pony Life toy line [1] [20] [22]. To be honest, I think Rainbow Dash’s new hairstyle is a bit too wild. I can tell that the Pony Life series will take place between the third and last seasons of Friendship Is Magic because of how Twilight Sparkle has the wings that made her an alicorn in the third season [12]. One unfortunate downgrade is how each of their cutie marks have been reduced to only one essence on display, but they at least still suit their names and personalities [14] [15]. What makes the art style of the ponies more refreshing is how emotions are displayed, quite similar to how quirky expressions were introduced in the reboot of the Powerpuff Girls that began in 2016 [21] [25] [26], such as diamond-shaped sparkles in Applejack’s eyes when she is driving a fire engine and spirals in Rarity’s eyes when she makes a scene on a chaise lounge.

Allow a shattered Twilight Sparkle to sum up the reactions to the previous trailer of some disapproving bronies and pegasisters [3] [6]. [15]

As for me, I think the new character designs are alright, even when Applejack is wearing a beret. [15]

The art style of the backgrounds reminds me of Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends to a degree [2] [14] [15]. I can say that the colours are quite vibrant and enhance the premise of ponies living happily in a civilized society. On the other hoof, some objects are only outlines, which is quite an odd aspect and may negatively affect the overall quality for some viewers [14] [15] [16]. Some proportions in the backgrounds are too surreal and wonky, including the shape of counters. As shown in some of the promotional images that were shown some months ago, I do not really like how the floor behind the counter at Sugarcube Corner is not displayed completely horizontally and how some of the outlines for the staircase at Rarity’s sanctuary are not completely surrounding the colour [3] [16]. The reduced effort put into the backgrounds also remind me of the backgrounds of Garfield Originals and the third and fourth seasons of Dexter’s Laboratory [9] [23]. This is not such a big deal to me as reduced quality in art design would usually be a decision to cut costs. I would be more concerned about the portrayal of the characters in each episode in front of disproportionate backgrounds.

I like how the colours are not too saturated and easy on the eyes, but there are wonky proportions everywhere. I can at least the surreal proportions can suit the more energetic tone the Pony Life series is going for and help the characters stand out more with their fairly thick outlines, but they can still be seen as a sign of decrease in art quality. [15]

I can also say that the background of this image is at least really pretty. [15]

So, what is the premise of Pony Life? Well, the trailer shows that the spin-off of Friendship Is Magic will focus on the civilized lives of the Mane Six involving some moments of humour and less focus on any fantasy elements [4] [13] [14]. Apart from that, Rainbow Dash and Applejack are both seen drinking a bottle of potion, which is a sign of a bottle of potion being the prime source of solving conflict [15]. At some point in the series, it would be interesting to see the development of Potion Nova, a brand new character who seems to be possibly the only Pony Life exclusive character [17]. One thing that concerns me is the possibility of the value of friendship being overshadowed by the flaws of Teen Titans GO [24] [27], including reduced likeability of the main characters and too much whacky humour overshadowing character development. As long as the morality of benefiting friendships will still be present to a degree and there are no signs of the show being a bad influence for young children with poor morals [13] [27], Pony Life can potentially honour the magic of friendship from its masterpiece of a predecessor.

Wait a minute! How can the ponies be able to securely hold an item, such as a bottle with their hooves?! Questioning cartoon logic sure is fun. [15]

What is more important is that Pony Life should at least provide some moral teachings for a young audience, just like how Friendship Is Magic did [13]. [15]

What is more important than a character’s style is a character’s portrayal. According to some more promotional images, the Mane Six might have somewhat different explorations within their developments [16]. Oddly enough, Rainbow Dash is seen putting on weight as she watches television, possibly leading to an episode focusing on her competitive nature being put to a strange new test [4]. Twilight Sparkle is seen exercising, which I think would suit Rainbow Dash better, but it could expand on the brainy alicorn’s determination in a different area. Fluttershy is seen with leaves and sticks in her mane and tail, which might be a sign of an episode focusing on her helping some animals. Rarity’s two images make an assuming joke, but they could lead to an episode about how physical imperfection is okay. Pinkie Pie is seen meditating, which could lead to her trying to be less hyperactive. Applejack’s image is the most in-character as she is eating an apple. Reflecting on my concern about Pony Life ending up as a downgrade like Teen Titans GO [24] [27], I sincerely hope the characters will not be suddenly reduced to laughing stocks and their promotional images will not be misleading [4] [16].

Making Rainbow Dash competitive enough to try and be the “worst pony” is really taking her competitiveness to the extreme [4], which is quite concerning. [16]

As for the lovely Princess Celestia who is also returning in Pony Life, she seems to be interested in television, which is yet another sign of the forthcoming series focusing more on aspects of modern life rather than any fantasy elements. But can she still be the elegant voice of reason we loved from Friendship Is Magic? [15]

While plenty of Pokémon trainers who have fond memories of playing Pokémon Snap on the Nintendo 64 are looking forward to checking out its enriched remake for the Nintendo Switch that is simply titled “New Pokémon Snap” [8] [19], some bronies and pegasisters seem at least willing to give the Pony Life series a chance. While I understand the art style of the characters and backgrounds is not really all that appealing to some of us [3], I still believe the series can still consist of clever writing that includes refreshing, but familiar and faithful portrayals of memorable characters as shown in the new intro and good humour, including a fourth-wall break from Applejack we saw in the trailer [14] [15]. As long as the new series that will air in Summer 2020 will consist of similar teachings about friendship, it can be something for children to cherish in the same way our bronies and pegasisters have cherished Friendship Is Magic [7] [13]. As for the current era of animation aimed at adults, there is a show that Angel Dust, the four-armed frenemy from the pilot of Hazbin Hotel is yet to put on for many Hazbeans out there [10] [11].

I just cannot get over how gorgeous the pink spider web background is in a preview of Angel Dust’s new schemes that will be out soon. [10]

As for Pony Life, will it do some filler between the end of Generation 4 and the beginning of Generation 5 justice or not? We shall find out really soon. [16]

A Language Of Love Spoken At Hazbin Hotel

This is a brief analysis of a French dub of an animated pilot that contains content aimed at mature audiences, including:

•       One moderate drug reference
•       Moderate sexual references
•       Cartoon violence

Bonjour et salut, je m’appelle Laura. Not too long ago, an official French dub of the delightfully demonic masterpiece created by Vivienne Maree Medrano [10], the pilot of Hazbin Hotel was uploaded into her YouTube channel while many folks in the United Kingdom celebrated Victory in Europe Day in memory of the brave soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the country during the Second World War, marking the seventy-fifth anniversary of the war’s conclusion [11] [12]. The brand new French of Hazbin Hotel is very beneficial for further increasing the intellectual property’s appeal to adult cartoon fans in France and certain parts of Canada whose first language is French [19]. Quite coincidentally, Alastor can speak French quite moderately, according to some answers from Medrano [5]. Furthermore, I believe that could have also been part of the motivations of Lucy Studer, Cécilia “Calis” Goncalves and Matilde Sauvaitre to gather a new team of voice actors and such for a French dub since the radio demon is one of Medrano's favourite original characters [5] [19]. The outstanding success of the original English version of the pilot must have greatly motivated the creative team into practically establishing a new foreign dub to further increase its appeal and ambition [18] [19].

The motivation for an official French dub of a hellish masterpiece must have bloomed like Spring in Paris. [4]

“Smile, my dears! We have an encore, but in a different language!” [18]

Of course, you do not always have to fully understand the language to truly enjoy something. Heck, I enjoy listening to the Japanese songs from the Project Diva games, including Deep Sea Girl and there have been times when an anime fan whose first language is English disapproved of an anime’s official English dub [15] [26] [28]. I am sure that plenty of young Canadian players whose first language is English enjoyed the gameplay of that Rayman game for computers called “Les Dictées de Rayman” back in 1998 [3] [4], despite how it was only available in French [24]. Additionally, I do not think I need to fully understand French to be enchanted by the angelic singing voice of Marie.P, the singer who did the singing voice of Charlie for the French dub [19]. Despite how some of us can at least enjoy a cartoon without fully understanding a foreign dub, any fellow English-speaking Hazbeans could try watching the French dub after activating English subtitles in the settings, but I honestly do not recommend that as Google’s translating is not always one-hundred percent accurate unless the uploader puts some effort into providing fairly accurate translations in the subtitles [3] [4] [19].

I also do not have to fully understand the French version of Alastor’s song to enjoy how upbeat it sounds [19], even though the radio demon has proven himself to be one of the most powerful characters towards the end of the pilot [18]. [19]

“Les Dictées de Rayman” was also known as “Rayman Dictées” and was one of Rayman’s most well-spoken moments [3] [4], even though the educational game was only available in French. I am sure that plenty of French ’90s kids who enjoyed the game back then shall enjoy the French dub of the pilot of Hazbin Hotel as fairly young adults in 2020 [19]. [24]

It looks the voice acting is not the only thing about the pilot that has been converted into French for French viewers [19]. Various text in the hellishly vibrant backgrounds has been changed from English to French, including the contact details on Charlie’s hellphone and the red signs aimed at sinners to warn them about their punishments [18] [19], which further increases the dub’s accessibility for those who can only speak and understand French. On the other hand, not every example of text has been translated into French, such as the “666 News” logo, which is no big deal to me since I understand that learning a new language is not as easy and carefully displaying good translations may be slightly time-consuming. Moreover, at least some effort has been put into at least a fair amount of text for French viewers. And ultimately, many of us cartoon critics would believe that well-spoken dialogue associated with a plot is far more important [18]. Taking some time to edit a fair amount of English text into an accurate translation of any other language further shows the associates' credibility and reliability when it comes to making an official dub highly accurate [19].

Oh great. Even the creepy letter sent to Angel Dust has been translated into French. Oh joy. [19]

What also interests me about the French dub is that the images of the established characters in the credits are different compared to the English dub [18] [19]. I like how Angel Dust can be seen with Fat Nuggets, his pet pig [6]. And no, I am not going to comment on how he is only in his underwear like a complete pervert [19]. I can see that the way Vaggie seems to be worried as she sees Charlie’s firework through a window is yet another sign of her loyalty and compassion for her [18]. We are once again confronted by Alastor looking rather demonic with glowing red eyes as he appears to be manipulating a shadow. How Niffty is holding a carton of juice instead of a bottle of wine could be a sign of her being a teetotaler [19], which can expand on her character to a degree. How different images of characters appear exclusively in a French dub of the pilot reminds me of how the main characters of the Sly Cooper series were drawn and animated very differently in the Japanese version of Sly Raccoon and how Crash Bandicoot received an exclusive design to appeal to Japanese gamers [1] [29].

Sir Pentious is also seen having a nice cuppa in the credits of the French dub. Looks like the next war is none of his business [16]. [19]

I am aware that some Western Sly Cooper fans prefer the art style of the cutscenes in the Japanese version of the first Sly Cooper game over the art style of them in the Western releases. [29]

Since we are still waiting for the pilot to expand into a series, I would also like to express some more hopes for what can enhance the premise’s legacy [30] [31] [32] [33]. Medrano has mentioned her interest in producing a Halloween special with her loyal crew, which would make sense since Hazbin Hotel is set in Hell [7]. A Christmas special would also be speculator, even though Christmas was meant to be for celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, according to Christianity [2]. I would still like a little karma hurled at the mean and homophobic Katie Killjoy. Since Niffty is simply adorable, I would also like to see her excel in bilingualism [8]. And who knows? There could be a death metal number to give the series an Aggretsuko vibe [22], which can fit the premise of a hotel set in Hell. Surely some fellow Hazbeans who are also fellow metalheads cannot go wrong with some French metal in the French dub of a new episode [17] [21]. It is still uncertain what is next for Hazbin Hotel at this point, so let us simply appreciates how the pilot has received a new version that consists of another language to increase the population of the Hazbean empire [7].

I would still like to see a softer side of Angel Dust in a new episode of Hazbin Hotel [32] [33]. Maybe his pet piggy can help [6]. [19]

Even if another establishment of Hazbin Hotel is only a language dub of the pilot, I strongly believe that Medrano still has this inspirational quote from Lotte Reinigen on her mind [18]. I also believe that she can still take it to heart for another episode. [19]

In conclusion, I am impressed at how the Hazbin Hotel Version Française team has managed to increase the pilot’s accessibility for viewers who speak French by establishing an official French dub [19]. But of course, dubs in different languages do not always have to be official as there have been some multilanguage dubs done by foreign Hazbeans before the release of the official French dub of the whole pilot [14]. In addition to that, there can always be a fanmade English dub of an anime that firstly aired in Japan [27]. According to Medrano’s message of gratefully thanking the French crew, more dubs of Hazbin Hotel’s pilot will soon be established for the sake of more appeal and accessibility, such as a Spanish dub for plenty of Mexican viewers. Surely French has been referred to as “the language of love” [13], but plenty of us also consider Spanish to be a romantic language too, including yours truly [23] [25]. The same hopes for more language dubs can apply to Helluva Boss, another pilot set in the same interpretation of Hell [20]. Furthermore, an official French dub of Helluva Boss might be uploaded onto Medrano’s channel within about a month or two. Au revoir, fellow sinners.

Choosing to establish an official Spanish next would make sense since Vaggie can speak Spanish and has demonstrated her ability in the pilot [9] [18]. [19]
